I'm mildly wanderlusting for Finnish both because I think it's an interesting language in its own right but also because I miss a language with a phonemic orthography where you know how to pronounce words just by looking at them.

Hold that thought.

I'd already read something about that, but - since I'm a very text-driven person - it still looks relatively innocuous in comparison with a language which doesn't write most of its vowels and, in general, has a script which is pretty messed up.

I think I'm really over Romance languages. I can't see myself studying any of them unless I need to for practical reasons.

voron wrote:Turkish?

Yeah, I miss Turkish sometimes but Finnish sounds much clearer to my ears, moreover that <ğ> annoys me.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions but I'm not really going to take up any new language for the time being. :)

It's amazing they still don't have Arabic (not only that, they don't even have a slightest intention of starting it).

Don't tell me about technical difficulties with the script. They have other languages that use a different script.

Ikr? I'm not sure why they don't seem to bother with Arabic, either. :? Are they worried they won't be able to handle the dialect diversity or something?

To be clear, though, I only said Spanish because I remember he was studying Spanish earlier. I realized/remembered neither that he'd decided to stop studying Romance languages nor that he ever did anything with Turkish.

EDIT: Aha, this isn't the first time he's wanderlusted for Finnish and mentioned Turkish!

Peut-être il n'y a personne qui veut créer le cours? Doesn't Duo now use the incubator system to allow users to create courses?

Yeah, but it's not even in the incubator at all. I guess there's a whole bunch of other courses they want to create first. Idk.

But that's what I meant. Maybe there's no one who has volunteered to create the course? Afaik you can submit an application to create a new course, though I don't know their vetting process.

I gave in to my most recent Wanderlust. It actually feels good to be back on this. If you can identify the language, you get a cookie!

Of course, it's Manchu.

Oh OK, yeah idk. They seem to be pretty strict about their criteria for who can help create a course (they pretty much have to be native speakers of the language IIRC).

EDIT: Okay, I took a look, and nope, that's definitely not the issue. They've been planning on making an Arabic course for English speakers for at least two years already.

EDIT2: They do need more contributors, but there still seem to be people who are willing to help. There's already a course for teaching English through Modern Standard Arabic, and the contributors to that are waiting for the Duolingo staff to put MSA in the incubator. It's not clear whether the issue is the fact that Duolingo is working on a bunch of other languages already or whether the delay is due to technical issues.
