Is this Hebrew script?

Postby katze » 2012-06-08, 21:24

I was looking through some old photos that my aunt had of my grandfather and there was this unusual script written on the back. At first I thought it might be a secret code because my grandfather worked for the german army as a courrier. He drove between headquarters (don't know where) and the out-posts. Some people suggested Hebrew or Yiddish and have ruled out German shorthand. I am hoping someone can help.

I can make out some letters that belong to the handwritten Hebrew script, but I'm not too sure since there are a couple funny letters that I can't make a connection to the script.

Any idea what other languages might use similar script/letters. A friend ruled out Arabic as well.

My guess it would be Yiddish due to the double yods, but Hebrew has those too... Just not as often as Yiddish, I think. Those are the only two languages that use the script (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cursive_Hebrew).

Just wait a bit and an Israeli will come to confirm my guess. :)

Thank you JackFrost. I've been waiting patiently, so I can wait some more. I know that someone will come up with an answer.

It does seem like an Hebrew script.

As JackFrost said, some letters seem a bit odd,but not as much that I couldn't attribute them corresponding characters in the cursive Hebrew script, while excusing the writer for his bad penmanship.

However,it isn't Hebrew and It is beyond my knowledge to tell whether it is Yiddish.

What about interpreting those awkward lines as a cryptogram written by an unlearned person trying to use Hebrew letters? A thing for המוסד למודיעין ולתפקידים מיוחדים ?

I've shown this to a friend who showed this to 2 Yiddish speakers and according to them they can't make any sense from this note.

Only the first word is readable to me and might be spelling בריעטייצה which could be a very non-standard or just wrong spelling for בריטיש or something.Though,as said,it doesn't seem to be Yiddish either.

110% Definitely NOT Hebrew script, it does has some letters that resemble Hebrew, but too many that are not even close to any Hebrew letter, new or old, in no Hebrew alphabet you will find those letters!
and its not Yiddish eider, this is a completely different alphabet with no connection to Hebrew.

Well,I can count about 14 different characters in this note,12 of which could easily be identified as belonging to the cursive Hebrew script.

The remaining 2 are what appears to be a Yod with an over-lengthened Kamatz beneath it[only seems to occur before a Vav,or the vertical line,if you prefer] and that curled line which occurs twice in the note and poses the greatest difficulty to identify.

I am not necessarily arguing this is Hebrew script, but Bernard's suggestion sounds plausible to me.

well definitely have no knowledge of hebrew, however when i cheked the link provided up there it does have a clear resemblence with cursive hebrew script. Perhaps it is ladino? I will try to show it to one of my ladino speaking friends this weekend if no answer comes up till then.

I also thought it could be Rashi script (ladino uses Rashi script when is wrote in Hebrew, but most ppl write it in latin script ), but it does not look like Rashi script needer.
