Mezzofanti, I guess you have to re-learn your old-fashioned English.

When your dad emails you a link to a beginner French podcast because he knows you're going to France for a little while this summer and you're ecstatic to find out that there are 333 lessons, the last one was made a week ago and the series dates back to 2006.
He actually sent me two links to two series, but one of them didn't look that good to me.

Pic related, my face when Mezzofanti appears

One of my profs was telling us just the other day how back in the day there weren't all these security measures and he would just throw certain books out the window in the library then walk out of the library and pick them up. (He's 69 so back in the day probably means in the 60s.)

I hate the very thought of not having the Internet around. I mean if you don't even know that such a thing will one day become possible, you don't care, it's a thing of sci-fi. But knowing what's possible and then having to go back to a time when it wasn't would hurt me. :(

That...is...fucking...awesome...
And seconding the thing about the Internet. I've wasted so much time on here, but at the same time I've learned so many things that I wouldn't have otherwise.

The other day I accidentally stole two books from my uni's library. :para: When I realized the system still said they were inside the library (the day I wanted to renew them), I went back and got them out, weirded out about how that could've happened. I tried to remember what I had done, and yes, I could do it again, there's a way when you're checking them out for the system not to remember it demagnetized the books. I reported it, and they told me they knew about this already, and they've been trying to get the people in charge to fix it for the last three years. :| Apparently every now and then a student like me shows up and tells them.

When your idea of "taking a break" from language study is translating something from one strange foreign language into another. (God, why am I translating Manchu into Gothic at 4 a.m.?)

When you think "Okay, I'm going to learn German tonight", open your Gothic book, and convince yourself it's sort of like German.

I honestly hate the shit out of (okay, not really, but yeah, certainly at least a bit) dead languages, but that, sir, is admirable.

•When you drool after having acquired a whole bunch of Modern Greek materials online.
•When you are an American who does not listen to a single song sung in English.
•When you would like nothing more than to study your foreign languages 24/7.
•When you start comparing Spanish and Portuguese on Notepad out of boredom.
•When you rush to get your homework done just to hit the language books afterward.
•When the local librarians ask you how you learn so many languages and you feel awkward.
•When all the books you check out or purchase have to do with languages.

Not sure if this hasn't been said yet but ...

When you get a new package and it has an instruction menu included and the first thing you do is to take out the menu and read it in all the languages included just to see if you can figure out some words or phrases by comparing them, especially if there are languages you're not familiar with. And then you of course try to read the menu in all those language to anyone around you while knowing they don't give a damn about it. (I suppose this mainly applies to those in countries where we get instruction menues in several languages) :P

Instruction manual. A menu is a list of food at a restaurant. :)
I read them to myself and compare languages too, or just read in a language related to one I'm learning to see what I understand.
Anyway, I suppose what I'm about to do applies here. When going to the library to study, you mean you're studying languages, and that when you take breaks from the language study is when you do study for your classes.

I'm surprised none of them have said anything yet.

•Change Modern Greek to Coptic, I'm guilty. God, I wish I could have time to get back to this beautifully hideous piece of wonder...

•My personal library is somewhat over 90% language-related. I have a few Spanish novels, though.

It appears you think English, Korean, French, Japanese, German, Spanish, Arabic are just fine with you, with which I'd have to agree since I like all of them myself. I don't hate dead languages - there are quite a few I like, chiefly Biblical Hebrew, Classical Arabic, Classical Chinese and Old English - but I also don't tend to enjoy learning them as much as living ones.

Because they help me learning Old Engliish, Middle Korean, Old Frnech, Classical Japanese, Old High German, Old Castilian and Classical Arabic! ...okay, just kidding, though I admit having at least dabbled in their historical variants. Well, I have to know some living languages in order to survive, right? I started learning these languages before my necrophilia got really worsened, so I'm kind of stuck with them. I wasn't as classically inclined until like a few years ago...
