Elaine - Magyar

Postby Multiturquoise » 2013-08-22, 13:27

Jó napot!

I'm focused on Hungarian these days. I'm planning to buy Teach Yourself Complete Hungarian, so I can learn Hungarian. Phrasebooks and Dictionaries aren't enough to learn a language. I'm here to ask questions about Hungarian. This is my personal thread.

What is the most frequent sentence structure in Hungarian? The sentence structure is the most important thing to learn the basics. And there are many cases in Hungarian...
I know that the Turkish word "şarampol" comes from the Hungarian word "sorompó". Did you know?

Ez egy asztal.
Milyen színű ez az asztal?
Etc.

Subject-Object-Verb is the most used.
But it's not carved into stone.

Those aren't cases like in German or Slavic languages.
Hungarian cases are easy because they function like prepositions, the only difference is that they come attached to the end of words.

Did you know?
This is news for me. Good to know.

I can say some Turkish words derived from Hungarian.
Kopça -> Kapocs
Salaş -> Szállás

And thanks for telling me the most used sentence structure in Hungarian.

For example = A macska az asztalon alszik. = SOV

And I know to ask the colour of something in Hungarian.
What colour is this table = Milyen színű ez az asztal?

I think my Hungarian is not enough good. So I'll buy the Teach Yourself book.

Do you know Barbara Palvin? She is a supermodel from Hungary, and I watched an interview with her in Hungarian. Here is the video:

Yes, that would be the most correct option.
But depending on what you would like to emphasise you can change the order as you please.
Do you know Barbara Palvin?

I don't really watch Hungarian television just the news sometimes.

I'm trying to write some sentences.

Az asztal a szobában van.
Az asztalok a szobában vannak.
Magyarul akarok tanulni.
Mi magyarul beszélünk.
Magyarok vagyunk.
Nincsen pénzem.
Melanie a széken ül.
A kutya jön.
A kutyak jönnek.
Van pénzem, de nem vagyok gazdág.

Ügyes.

Én soha sem tudtam megjegyezni, hogy a "de" elé kell vessző.

I can form basic sentences, but I'm going to go harder. The thing that confuses me the most in Hungarian is also the syntax. But I'm working hard to improve my Hungarian.

Go and give me some exercises to do. (Fill in the blanks, translate or any exercise)

Go and translate everything in the Translations sub-forum
and I'll try to check if they are correct or not. :)

Oh my! I don't know wether the reporter or the model is more dum...

Salas? I didn't know you took that from us :)

Eibhlín:
What about a translation excercise that would also makes you learn and practice a lot? :)

Holnap délután elmegyek a boltba. (I will go to the shop tomorrow afternoon)

Now try to transform the sentence - the word order - the following ways:
Put the main emphasis on:

1. Tomorrow
2. in the afternoon
3. I will go
4. to the shop

We will help if you need it.

Emphasis exercises are too academical. I need grammar exercises, which are easier to learn than the emphasis. What to do while making grammar exercises:

1. Don't forget to give some vocabulary (which I need to do the exercises), and use the words in the vocabulary, do not use any word which is not in the vocabulary while preparing exercises.
2. Give a grammar rule for each lesson.
3. Please start from the easiest, and the next exercise shall get harder than the previous exercise (please wait me to finish)

Because I can learn any language best using this method. (Vocabulary-Grammar-Exercises)

I tried to translate
"Tom lost his keys, and spent three hours trying to pick the lock, before giving up and forcing a window."

"Tamás elvesztette a kulcsait és a zárat feltörni igyekezve három órát töltött, mielőtt feladná és egy ablakot feszegetné."

I got aid from, but didn't completely use machine translation. Does it contain severe grammatical and/or syntactical mistakes? If it does, please explain the corrections to me.

Köszi, Bora.
