Only one song today. I heard it on the radio a couple of times and it caught my notice:

Dejan Lapanja - Cesta srca (The road of the heart):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs-5Qc-z-BY

I haven't heard about him yet, but I checked his website and it seems he's worked with many Slovenian musicians and bands so far. This year he also released a cd called Ni časa za preroke (There's no time for prophets).

There's another song of his I quite like, but I couldn't find it on youtube.

His website:
http://www.dejan-lapanja.com/index.html
And myspace:

I just want to share a few Slovenian songs I like

Zoltan band - Moje Prekmurje

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ES9uV-wjyRY

I actually don't have any info on this. What I know is that it's in Prekmurian dialect (it's known for being the only Slavic language/dialect along with neighbouring Prlekian to have ü /y/ sound)

Anyhow, a great song, different from the 'normal' Slovenian folk(Avsenik, Grnjak etc..)
--------------------------------------------

Alojz Grnjak - Železnodverska
The anthem of Prlek
Another chance to enjoy Slavic ü's :D
And it has subtitles!

You're a real fan of folk music it seems. I have never heard either of these two songs before. But they're ok. :)

I think you should hear some traditional folk songs sung by a well-known (at least here) choir too, that is why I'm going to post some songs sung by Slovenski oktet. The choir was etablished in 1951 (changed members inbetween obviously) and as far as I could hear they sing folk songs mostly (but not always Slovenian).

This is their homepage (the section on their cds has very short samples of their songs):
http://www.slovenski-oktet.si/index.asp

And some of their youtube videos:
Katrca
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKXb8K0yDMg (the song they most often sing)

Nocoj pa oh nocoj (Tonight, oh tonight)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VG9kBXWO ... re=related

Pojdam v Rute (I'll go to Rute)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkEDyP3K ... re=related

Lipa zelenela je (The linden tree was becoming green, this one is actually not a folk song, but it is perceived as such)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QxfWyIk ... re=related

The only two verses of the first stanza that confuse me:

Sredi štale sem zagledal lepo pastirico,
in takoj privoščil sem si jo s ta velko žlico,

I saw a pretty shepherd girl in a stable
and I... with a big spoon?

The second one on the other hand.. Nič ne razumem.

Naj Evropa pazi se, Slovenci smo nabriti,
Klepci in Krpani, še v pesmi kremeniti.
Ko zvečer na lojtri popustijo nam zavore
v kamricah do jutra je potres.
Čisto vsak Slovenec lojtro eno vsaj primore,
vsako noč smo angeli nebes.

veliko zlico = big male ....

nabriti = prefrigan, smart in a naughty way
Klepci in Krpani = "heroes" (Peter Klepec, Martin Krpan)
kremeniti = probably from "kremen" (quartz stone), "hard like stone"?
lojtra = ladder, perhaps figuratively that boys would climb a ladder to reach the darling's bedroom
primore = imeti (pri sebi)
Still the last 3 rows, we don't get it over here (in the traffic jam and "poplave")

Personally, I've enjoyed the music of Tomaž Pengov and Sedmina.

Tomaž Pengov plays in a folksy singer/songwriter style, and I found his 1973 album Odpotovanje to be a quiet work of art. Here's a song off that album:

Sedmina also play folksy music, featuring guitar, violin, clarinet and vocals. I can especially recommend their 1982 album II Dejanje.

On je eden izmed najboljših glasbenikov tukaj in njegove pesmi imajo velikokrat dejansko neko sporočilo.

Have you guys heard of Adi Smolar or Tinkara Kovač? He's one of the best musicians here and his songs usually have a real message in them. His songs are also often sung in colloquial Slovene (or rather in Ljubljana dialect) so it may be interesting for you to hear him. Tinkara Kovač is also a very well known singer (and musician, of course), mainly in Littoral (West Slovenia). She sings in both Slovene and Italian. Her style is different from Smolar's but it's ok. I like both of them a lot.

Here're some of their songs:

Adi mi se zdi kot en res zabaven in pameten umetnik. Ni glasba mu pa ni slaba. Odlično priporočilo!

Mogoče bi ti bil všeč tudi Iztok Mlakar. Njegov still je podoben Adijevemu, poje pa v primorskem narečju (natančneje, goriško narečje).

Kinda funny that one of the best Slovene songs wasn't made by a Slovene singer :D (R.I.P. Toše.) The song was a huge hit here. And I've never heard of that Sanja Grohar's song :? I think I should get more familiar with the Slovene music scene.

Yes, he was a great singer and I was really surprised when I heard the song for the first time because it was in Slovenian and I was wondering why he has done a song in Slovenian. Anyway, it's much better that the Macedonian version : Тоше Проески - Среќна ли си ти.
I heard Sanja Grohar for the first time on Balkanika TV (btw, do you know this programme?) and I liked it very much because that was the very first song in Slovenian I've ever heard and I'm surprised because of the fact you don't know it. :yep:

Ah, cool. And I agree, the Slovene version is better from the Macedonian one. I don't think I've ever heard of Balkanika TV but it's probably because I don't watch TV a lot, and even when I do, I mainly watch Discovery Channel, NG, History Channal and the like. :P Based on that, I couldn't have heard the song on TV, and what's for radio, I don't listen to it much either and there are mainly English or Italian songs on the one I usually listen to. So yeah ... I don't know much about Slovene songs :(

P.S.: I'm now listening to an actual radio hoping to hear some Slovene songs.

You haven't heard about Balkanika TV?!? What a shame! Just kidding. This is a programme where Balkan folk and pop music is played. Usually I don't watch it but sometimes they play good songs in different Balkan languages.

Hehe, nopes, I haven't heard of it or ever seen it, or rather, I may have heard of it but never paid enough attention to know what it's about. :P Thanks for the link, I'll check it out, looks interesting.

Oh, on a side note, it's a "channel" not a "programme", a programme is a single broadcast, Balcanica TV as a TV station (company) is a channel. :)
