Lithuanian word list

Postby kman1 » 2006-10-28, 4:16

I'm trying to make a common list of words for learning Lithuanian, can someone please translate the following words into Lithuanian? (Note: I would look this up myself, but I can't since I don't know of one single online comprehensive English-Lithuanian dictionary.) All the ones I have are Lithuanian-Lithuanian which doesn't help me out any right now at the beginner level.

pick up, drop, go, come, drink, eat, sit, stand, want, like*, sleep, wake up, do, make, cook, open, close, walk, run, clean, hit, catch, play, rest, lay, lie, put, hold, call, talk, speak, say, tell, use, know, understand, raise, study, read, watch, look, see, sick, to have*, give, take, kiss, sex, sing, kick, throw, receive, turn*, get up*, stop, start, touch, believe, think, fall, push, pull, move, write,

there, here, up, down, like this*, this way*, house, food*, weather*, body*, family*, car, bus, train, plane, airport, beach, girl, women, boy, man, mom, dad, teacher, friend, together, alone, boyfriend, girlfriend, vacation, school, right, left, straight,

always, never, before, well*, anything, nothing, there is, like I said, mine*, if, any*, whenever*, what, how, when, just (did..), no one, somewhere

angry, happy, sad, tired, sleepy, well, bad, good, difficult, easy, stinky, smells good, hot, cold, warm, tall, short, fat, skinny, beautiful, ugly, big, small, fast, slow, high, low, wide, narrow,

Thanks!!

Hey desper, I forgot to add examples along with the verb list. (so no one gets confused) Since I know that depending on the context of how a verb is used within a sentence the verb can be different, I added these examples to show which meaning of the verb is needed. Can you just look over these to make sure the verbs match, please. You don't need to change anything if they match, I just want to be sure that the verbs you provided correspond with the verbs used with the examples given below. Thanks again!!!

English: (these are all verbs)
pick up (pick up that off the floor), drop (I dropped my hat), go (go home now!), come (come here now!), drink (drink this water), eat (eat food), sit (sit down beside me), stand (stand right beside me), want (I want money), like*(I like girls), sleep (I am sleeping now), wake up (wake up in 5 minutes), do (do what I tell you to do), make (I made this for my mom), cook (cook steak), open (open the door), close (close the door), walk (I walk home), run (I run fast), clean (clean the house), hit (don't hit me), catch (catch the football), play (I don't want to play outside), rest (let's rest for a minute), lay (lay that book here), lie (Lie down here beside me), put (put that book on the shelf), hold (who is holding my baby?), call (call that man standing there), talk (he doesn't talk much), speak (I can't speak Latin), say (what did you say to me?), tell (please tell me now), use (did you use my razor?), know (I don't know you), understand (I don't understand what you're saying), raise (raise your hand), study (I never study for my test), read (I can read Cantonese), watch (let's watch the stars tonight), look (look at your hands, they bloody), see (do you see anything?), sick (I'm very sick now), to have* (I don't have any money at all), give (give me some money), take (don't take my dollar), kiss (she kissed me), sex (I like to have sex), sing (I can't sing at all), kick (kick the soccer ball), throw (throw the football), receive (I received this money from you), turn* (turn left here), get up*(get up out of your chair now), stop (stop talking!), start (he starts his job today), touch (don't touch my sandwich), believe (I believe you ate my food), think (I think she is pretty), fall (he fell down the stairs), push (dont push me!), pull (don't pull on my new shirt), move (Please move this box over there), write (I can't write in Latin)

Yeah, Alkonas is a dictionary. It's not free, however, so if you're not too much into studying it you can get something else.

Code: Select all

pakelk tai nuo grindų, numečiau skrybelę, eik namo dabar!, ateik čia dabar!, išgerk šį vandenį, valgyk maistą, sėsk šalia manęs, stovėk šalia manęs, noriu pinigų, mėgstu merginas->man patinka merginos, aš miegu, pabusk per 5 minutes, (daryk, ką aš tau pasakau), aš padariau šitą mamai, kepti kepsnį, atidaryk duris, uždaryk duris, einu namo, bėgu greitai, išvalyk namą, nemušk manęs, pagauk futbolo kamuolį, nenoriu žaisti lauke, pailsėkim minutę, paguldyk tą knygą čia, atsigulk šalia manęs, padėk tą knygą ant lentynos, kas laiko mano kūdikį?, pašauk tą žmogų, stovintį ten, jis nedaug šneka, aš nekalbu lotyniškai, ką man sakei?, pasakyk man dabar, ar naudojai mano skustuvą?, aš tavęs nepažįstu, (nesuprantu, ką sakai), pakelk rankas, niekada nesimokau testams, aš galiu skaityti kinų (I don't really know how to translate Cantonese so I went with Chinese), pažiūrėkim žvaigždes šiąnakt, (pažiūrėk į savo rankas, jos kraujuoja), ar ką nors matai?, aš labai sergu dabar->man labai bloga dabar, aš visiškai neturiu jokių pinigų, duok man pinigų, neimk mano dolerio, ji mane pabučiavo, man patinka mylėtis, aš visiškai negaliu dainuoti, spirk amerikietiško futbolo kamuolį, mesk futbolo kamuolį, aš gavau šiuos pinigus iš tavęs, pasisuk kairėn čia, atsikelk iš kėdės dabar, baik kalbėti, jis pradeda darbą šiandien, neliesk mano sumuštinio, (aš manau, kad tu suvalgei mano maistą), (manau, kad ji graži), jis nukrito nuo laiptų, nestumk manęs->nestumdyk manęs->nesistumdyk, netampyk mano naujų marškinių, pajudink tą dėžę ten (make it move)->padėk tą dėžę ten (put it there), negaliu rašyti lotyniškai

I've translated the examples, rather. Maybe that's not too accurate but anyway.
I've used (something, something) to mark sentenecs, which need comma in it - to avoid confusion.
Also, something->something stands for more than one possible translation.
That should help more than just the plain words.
Maybe you can use some dictionary to get the meanings, the stems, etc.

I've used informal imperative for commands.

Some things don't translate directly...

always (I always win), never (I never lose), before (before I eat, I always pray), well*(well.. Here it goes.
Hope you can understand my editing. ;)

ten, čia, į viršų, žemyn, (taip or šitaip), (taip/šitaip), namas, maistas, oras, kūnas, šeima, automobilis, autobusas, traukinys, lėktuvas, aerouostas, paplūdimys, mergaitė(like in Marry is a ten year old girl)/mergina(like for Missis or for 'girlfriend'), moterys, berniukas, vyras, mama, tėvelis, mokytojas, draugas, kartu, vienas, vaikimas, mergina, atostogos, mokykla, (dešinysis - the right one/dešinė - the right side), (kairysis - the left one/ kairė - the left side; also pusė - side), tiesus (go straight - eik tiesiai)

(visada - more often used; visuomet - also used), niekada, prieš, na (although many lithuanians say "nu" like in Russian), bet kas (I can't eat anything - Negaliu nieko valgyti; negaliu bet ko valgyti - I can't eat anything (like any random thing... I can't eat just anything)), niekas, yra (there is something - yra kažkas), kaip jau sakiau, jei(gu), bet koks, bet kada/kada tik, (kas - who is that? what is that?; ką - what did you say? who did you think about), kaip, kada, ką tik/kaip tik, niekas, kur nors

What's the point of those word lists if it is almost impossible to know their pronuciation? Written like that they don't offer enough information about stress and intonation, that means, if a foreigner pronounces them, most likely he will not be understood.

Really?? I didn't know that.... Oops.. Umm, well I guess I just won't say these words out loud, I'll just pronounce them inside my head. For now, at least. (hmm... that's a really good point though) Maybe there is some kind of voice Lithuanian/Latvian chat online somewhere. I'll keep an eye out for one.

No, you should simply gain access to a dictionary with all the necessary information (like http://www.lkz.lt/startas.htm).
