Curriculum Needed!

Postby Alfgrimur » 2011-03-27, 2:50

I only speak English and am interested in learning Northern Sami. I am trying to design a curriculum to follow, but finding English literature on Sami is not easy.

I have started working through the Gulahalan program using google translator for the Swedish, however, this is very painful and slow and Gulahalan doesn't answer all of my grammar questions.

I am much more grammatically oriented and would like to know if there is any grammar book, in English about Northern Sami.

A nice Sami-English-Sami dictionary would be awesome as well!

Hi Alfgrimur,

Most of the resources for learning North Sami are designed for speakers of Norwegian or Swedish (and even those resources are quite limited), so if you want to progress beyond very basic North Sami, some knowledge of Norwegian or Swedish would be a big help.

People on this forum have posted links to Sami language resources online, so take a look at them if you haven't yet. There is also a list of some resources here: http://home.earthlink.net/~arran4/siida ... nguage.htm

Since you are more grammatically oriented, I know a great book for learning North Sami verbs: http://shop.textalk.se/se/article.php?i ... rt=2905410 The explanations and translations of the verbs are in Swedish, but I think you could still get some use out of it with the help of a Swedish dictionary.
