Mon in dieđe maid passiivahápmi sáhttá geavahuvvot sámegillii, muhto dát siiddus sáhtát lohkat sámegiela passiivahámi birra: http://www.skolenettet.no/nyUpload/Sami ... vvagat.pdf . Ándagassii, siidu lea sámegillii. Oza dan sáni: passiiva.

(I don't know how the passive voice is used in Sami, but if you click on that link you can read a bit about the passive voice. Sorry though, it's in Sami. Press Ctrl + F and search for this word: passiiva.) Maybe it will be of some use to you!

Mu mielas sámegiella lea čáppat, muhto okto oahpat sámegiela lea váigat!

Dearvva, Colm! Genetiiva-akkusatiiva geavahuvvo nummiriiguin dahjege dat lea "guokte vielja" iige "guokte vieljat".

Hello, Colm! The genitive/accusative case is used with numbers so it's "guokte vielja" and not "guokte vieljat".

My name is Joseph and I am a student. I live in England and I want to learn North Sámi. :D

Although I'm rather cross at the moment because I lost the online grammar (it was a PDF, in Swedish) that I was reading. If anyone knows where this (or any) grammar is, I'd be super-grateful! Giitu!

Is it just me, or is "lea" (and similar forms) pronounced [le̯ə]? It seems the schwa exists in Northern Sami, but has never been documented (at least in anything I've read)...

It is mentioned in the German book "Lehrbuch der saamischen Sprache" by Bartens (http://www.amazon.com/Hans-Hermann-Bartens/e/B001JX8716).

Anyway, pronounciation also varies a lot depending on the region.

Ooh, that looks like a nice book... albeit extremely expensive. :)

It appears so. I've listened to Liekkas by Sofia Jannok a lot, and it seems she speaks a dialect different from the standard.

For example she pronounces "luottaid" as "luotta", and "savkal" as "sevkal".

Also, is "č" pronounced [tɕ] in some contexts/areas? It sounds like it to me, in more than one speaker. :hmm:

EDIT: Now that I think about it, it sounds more like [cç].

Giitu, mun gávdnin siidut aiggi dalle muhto mun vajáldahtin :? . Maid mun ledješin diehtit.

Mun háliidašin jearrat moade ássii vel.

How is the passive constructed? I couldn't find it anywhere.
How do the Finnish cases abessive (without), elative (out of/from within), ablative (from by) and instructive (by means of) translate sámegillii?

How is the passive constructed? I couldn't find it anywhere.
How do the Finnish cases abessive (without), elative (out of/from within), ablative (from by) and instructive (by means of) translate sámegillii?
The passive is constructed as follows.
a) for verbs with gradation (e.g. with even number of syllables and the stem ends in a, i, or u): the stem consonant (cluster) becomes "overlong", the diphthong is simplified and -ojuv'vot is added.
  • lohkat 'read' > lohkkojuv'vot 'to be read'
  • čállit 'write' > čál'lojuv'vot 'to be written'
  • doalvut 'bring' > dolvojuv'vot 'to be brought'
b) for verbs with odd number of syllables: stem + uv'vot
  • hálidit 'want' > háliduv'vot 'to be wanted'
  • beroštit 'care (about)' > beroštuv'vot 'to be cared (about)'
c) for verbs whose stem ends in e, o or á: add -juv'vot
  • hukset 'build' > huksejuvvot 'to be built'
  • diŋgot 'order' > diŋgojuvvot 'to be ordered'
With passives you have to remember that it conjugates in person and number (like in English) unlike in Finnish:
Mánná dolvojuv'vo skuvlii. | Mánát dolvojuv'vojit skuvlii. | Mun dolvojuv'von skuvlii.
The child is taken to school. | The children are taken to school. | I am taken to school.
(cf. Finnish Lapsi/Lapset/Minut viedään kouluun.)

Abessive case doesn't exist in Northern Sámi. You have to use a postposition, e.g. haga:
biepmu haga = ruoatta, ilman ruokaa 'without food'
dan haga = ilman sitä 'without it'
Verbs do have an abessive form ending in -keahttá: geahččat > geahčakeahttá = katsomatta 'without looking'

Sámi locative case (-s) corresponds to both Finnish inessive and elative and even adessive and ablative:
Mun orun Soađegilis. = Minä asun Sodankylässä. 'I live in Sodankylä'
Mun vuolggán Soađegilis. = Minä lähden Sodankylästä. 'I am leaving Sodankylä'
Mus leat čoavdagat. = Minulla on avaimet. 'I have the keys'
Son válddii mus čoavdagiid. = Hän otti minulta avaimet. 'He took the keys from me'

There is no instructive case in Sámi. I guess comitative case could sometimes correspond to Finnish instructive, but I think it varies from case to case.

Thanks a bunch, I'm highly interested in this stuff but I for the life of me can not find any proper resources to do so, such as bilingual texts and so on. Can you recommend me stuff in Finnish to help me learn it? I own the Davvin 1 book but it's really really confusing and I don't have the audio for it which seems kind of elementary for the success of learning, so if there are any good resources out there, please let me know.
