A nice online course

You can either do it online for free or order it as a book + CD course.
It does not run correctly in Mozilla Firefox and other decent browsers though, you have to use Micro$oft Internet Explorer to get it displayed as it was intended.
They don't give the price of the book on the website, but I have just written a mail to inquire, so I can tell you

Another interesting online course from the same source:
http://www.ur.se/ur/sok/frameset_web.html?/samasta
This is Lule Saami! This dialect is spoken south of the North-Saami area, in northern Sweden. (Northern Saami or Davvi Sámegiella is spoken in Norway north of Narvik, north of Kiruna in Sweden and in the North of Finland, apart from the Inari area.)
Northen Saami is the most active dialect nowadays, but Lule is its close neighbour, so it might be interesting as well. The spelling is a bit different, and lots of phrases seem to be completely different, but that's typical for everyday phrases (greetings etc.) in every language with regional variants. The basic grammar seems to be rather similar.

I have just started learning Sami with gulahalan. I would love to visit Lappland (next year if I am rich enough). I am a frenchman attracted to non-indoeuropean languages.

Bonsoir!
I've been learning Sámi for a while and it is a really beautiful language.
Feel free to have a look around the forum, maybe there is something useful here for you. I will post more info soon, but I'm busy with some other languages at the moment.
If you are interested in non-indoeuropean languages, what about Greenlandic -> this way please

Hahah let's hustle all the Sami learners into the Greenlandic place
If you're in for one "snowy" language you might as well learn them all
Welcome, by the way, raoul

Bartens' handbook

I managed to find Bartens' Handbuch der saamischen sprache from an internet bookstore. It seems to be the only good handbook that is not written in a scandinavian language (my danish is very poor). There used to be a copy in a library in Paris but it seems to have been stolen.
I am completing lesson 2.
Look what I found! :D

Sammallahti's intro to Saami languages

..is great
I was just reading about the disguised speech of the Sámi and it's really amazing. Reindeer herding must be boring
But the book is great, contains lots of grammar, tons of phonology and a good vocab at the back of the book. Worth a look

Scroll down a bit to find links to the Norwegian and Sámi versions of the stories in those books.
I opened them in two browser windows next to each other and tried reading a bit, comparing the Sámi with the norsk text
It's great fun, even if you are not so advanced yet as to understand all the grammatical patterns, but it's useful for collecting new vocabulary.
Cute little site for practicing

Click on the first "eGirji" which is linked below the first heading "Boađe mu mielde".
This site actually goes with a schoolbook, so you will need some knowledge of basic vocabulary and grammar to work through it successfully. But it is really lovely and very encouraging

Hey, schön dich zu sehen
Ich bin ja immer schon ganz frustriert, weil es anscheinend niiiiiemanden gibt, der Samisch lernt. Ich habe mir neulich ein paar ganz tolle Kinderbücher bestellt, falls du Interesse hast, kannst du mir ja mal schreiben
