Kukushka

Postby Steisi » 2006-10-20, 14:08

Recently Geoff recommended this movie to us, in which a Finnish soldier, a Russian soldier and a saami woman meet during world war II. Since neither of them speaks the other's language, they communicate in their own languages only. This is very interesting if you are not watching a Russian dubbed version ;)
I was just wondering what kind of Saami the woman speaks in the movie? I guess it's Inari saami since the movie is set in Finland. Does anyone know?
A very good movie anyway, I suggest all students of Finnish, Russian and Saami watch the movie.

I haven't seen the movie so I'm not sure but I think Anni-Kristiina Juuso speaks North Sami. Only about 15% of samispeaking samis in Finland speak Inari sami (and about 70% north sami, the rest speak skolt sami).

Just yesterday I reserved a Sami book, Davvin, from the Academic bookshop here in Helsinki. I hope it's North sami but I'm happy to learn any version :)

Eilen tilasin Helsingin Akateemisesta Kirjakaupasta saamen kielen kurssikirjan, Davvin. Toivon että siinä on pohjoissaamen kieli, mutta opin ihan minkä tahansa version :)

What does Kukushka mean?

BTW, I think that's the title of the film, nighean-neonach.

Replies to some of the questions re Kukushka

Kukushka I think is the Russian for cuckoo cf the Cuckoo as the English title. In Finnish it's Käen Pesä (cuckoo's nest), sometimes Käki (cuckoo). You'll get the idea from the film.

I'm not sure which Sami dialect Juuso speaks in the film. I would speculate it's North Sami. But at the time of watching, I'd not heard spoken North Sami. The reason I think it might be North Sami is because my friend's father, who is from Inari but speaks North Sami himself, knows Mr Juuso the father personally. The former also told me she was working at Kautokeino in radio broadcasting. Since she's from Finland, it's highly unlikely she'll be speaking Norwegian with the folks in Kautokeino. Therefore it's most probable she speaks North Sami natively and in the film.

So all the evidence points to North Sami. My hypothesis is rather weak and it is certainly a case for further investigation.

Me and her, we haven't been introduced!

One day I hope my friend's father will introduce me to her (and her whole family... oh well) :P She's one fit bird!

Pardon the pun, folks.

Hahah :D

Welcome to the forum :D It probably is Northern Sami..it's spoken in Kautokeino and it's the largest of the Sami's, to my knowledge. Thanks for the hypothesis, and if you get any autographs, get one for me too ;)
