Broken exercises - please help!

Postby wsz » 2008-02-07, 22:46

Hi there!

I recently noticed some exercises in the Exercise Centre are broken. Could somebody please correct them? It really is easy if you know the language. The problem with them is that they don't follow the syntax, which is very straightforward :)

Many thanks in advance :)

The broken exercises are:
- German:
http://home.unilang.org/main/exercise.p ... ercise=129
http://home.unilang.org/main/exercise.p ... ercise=130
http://home.unilang.org/main/exercise.p ... ercise=131

- Russian:
http://home.unilang.org/main/exercise.php?mode=display&exercise=107 fixed by voron

- Catalan:
http://home.unilang.org/main/exercise.php?mode=display&exercise=145 fixed by Núria Harket

The syntax is:
[answer/base form/hint]

There may be more than one correct answer and/or hint, in which case you need to separate them with |, eg:
[answer 1 | answer 2/base form/hint1 | hint2 | hint3]

Only the answer(s) is always required, that is:
[answer]

If there's no base form but there's a hint, please write:
[answer / ? / hint]

If there are only the answer and base form, then please write:
[answer / base form]

I get this

Exercise Centre - Saving
ERROR:Operation aborted due to a fatal error while archiving; contact the Site Webmaster

when I'm trying to edit them.

That happened because the exercise is broken :/ Anyway, I fixed it. Please try again.

Hi sorry for having messed up the exercise, but I'm a newbie and didn't got a clue how to write the exercise. I've changed the exercise now. I hope it's fine.

I'm pretty bad at this but I'll try to post more exercises.

Hi Núria Harket :)

Thanks for correcting the Catalan exercise and reporting the problem with the site (which - I believe - is solved now).

wsz, what would be the syntax if there's a choice between two variants?

It'd be:

Code: Select all

[answer 1 | answer 2]

The user is actually supposed to see both variants, and choose a correct one.

Like in an example:
Wczoraj czytałem/proczytałem książkę.

I could put them both in a hint but then it's not really clear for the user that he must click the hint to see them.

And one more thing, the Preview button does not seem to work.

Hm, so please write sth like this:

Code: Select all

[answer / czytałem lub proczytałem]

Please write the word lub (or) in the same language the description was written in (or - if there's no description - in the language of the current sentence).

I tried to use the following syntax:

Code: Select all

[answer/ answer1//answer2]

so that the variants appear with the slash.

It looks fine immediately after saving. But, if I reopen it for editing, the double slash is replaced with the single slash in the editor, and one more saving destroys the syntax.

I think it's worse yet that new exercises aren't even posted and therefore unavailable to others. I made some exercises... um, almost two months ago, I think, and none show up on the search/listing. Instead I have to type in the exact URL to get there, and I am the only one who knows what that URL is. I know this problem has lasted for maybe two years now because I had it with Romanian, and I haven't studied Romanian in about a year and a half... although eventually those ones did show up.

Thanks for letting me know! It's fixed now.

Is this the listing you were referring to? Which exercise(s) do you have in mind?
Anyway, all exercises are still available via the original exercise index at http://exercises.unilang.org I'm pretty sure that so does yours ;)

:o They show up there but not on the other list! How does one access the original list from the main website? I have been wanting to give my Swahili classmates a link to the exercises, and that one is much easier anyway. Asante sana!

What is 'there' and what is 'the other list'?  Please enter some links so that I know which list and exercise you're talking about 8)

Oh, sorry. I was going to do that, but I forgot when I saw them on the original list. :P

All the latest Swahili ones that show up on the original listing but not the other are created by me.

http://home.unilang.org/main/exercise.p ... ercise=142
http://home.unilang.org/main/exercise.p ... ercise=143
etc...

http://home.unilang.org/main/exercise.php
This is the one where they show up...

Hmm.. The resourceindex does seem to get regenerated properly, using the 'list' database in mysql. It seems has if your system changed and it can't index new exercises anymore? Have you abandoned the mysql listing?

Proy, I posted about this before in the admin forum. The resourceindex does NOT get regenerated properly. For example, when people add translations for stories, those do NOT get updated in the index. It is necessary to go into the resource index entries and add those new languages manually for a story. Same for the teaching clock... the new translations don't get added.

Maybe that isn't what is happening with the exercises, but the resourceindex has not been updating itself properly for a long time, and I've mentioned this a few times already.
