oozy wrote:I have never studied slovak language. It seems, that verb really should be on the second place (wow I'm learnig new things about my native language ;). But as you figured, also the order of the remaining words is important (if I understand you correctly).
...
But these things are real nuancies of the language. Every slovak should understand you. More important is right declination of words.

Let me just jump in and confirm what oozy said. Word order in Slovak (and Czech as well) is rather loose. The reason for this is the declension and conjugation of words. If you use correct declined/conjugated forms, you will be understood as it is the form of the word that bears the syntactic information, not the position of the word in the sentence.

So, for example, you can say an English sentence "Peter loves Jane" in six different ways in Slovak:

1. Peter miluje Janu.
2. Janu miluje Peter.
3. Peter Janu miluje.
4. Janu Peter miluje.
5. Miluje Janu Peter.
6. Miluje Peter Janu.

All sentences mean the same thing. In English, you can say "Jane loves Peter." but then it has a different meaning. In Slovak, you would use different forms of "Peter" and "Jana" to express the meaning of the second English sentence: Jana miluje Petera.

So here you go. :)

Basically, yes, but only one word order (SVO) is neutral, the other word orders imply a semantic stress on one of the elements and sound natural in some situations, while in other situations they don't.

That's right, but what I wanted to show was the fact that it's not too important where a word is placed within a sentence, as long as the word is being used in its correct form. Of course, this is a (over)simplification since the word order is not completely free in more structured sentences, yet the point is it's definitely freer than in, say, English.

So I hope that here I can make exercises with more fun.

Tak dúfam, že tu môžem robiť cvičenie s väčšou zábavou.

Odtiaľ = hence You have to use tak when you want to say So

Ja must be used when you want to insist

Robiť is here in the infinitive

väčšou is the comparative degree of viac

and finally, here fun is zábava

What sort of exercises do you want ?

Prekladové cvičenie

Prekladajte prosím do angličtiny:

Dôvod silnejšieho je vždy najlepší. (La Fontaine)

Človek ľahšie poznáva vesmír než svojho suseda. (Hemingway)

Keď niečo začnete odôvodňovať, už je to pochybný podnik. (P.Karvaš)

The second one means "a man knows the whole world better than his neighbour."

The rest don't really make any sense to me either. I've only understood some words.

Vesmír has here rather the sense of cosmos, by opposition to the ground things.

Can you underline the verbs in the others sentences ?

If you need a dictionnary, Here you've got one

Thanks a lot for a Slovak forum! I've only practised Slovak by learning wordlists etc. but it's not the same, as talking to the native Slovaks :).

Tá veta: "Dôvod silnejšieho je vždy najlepší" bude:
The reason of the strongest is always the best.

PS. Slovak keyboard is horrible :).

OK, skúšam...

Možno presvedčiť druhého našimi vlastnými argumentmi, ale k zmene názoru ich možno viesť iba pomocou ich vlastných argumentov.

It's possible to convince someone with our own arguments, but to change of heart we can only use their own arguments.

Neviem, či si som dobre do angličtiny preložil, preto ešte po poľsky...

Można przekonać kogoś naszymi własnymi argumentami, ale do zmiany jego sposobu myślenia możemy użyć tylko ich argumentów.

Can anyone posts some lessons? at least the pronunciation and then texts with translation and analysis on it, it's a very useful method, really. :D Count on me.

I'm currently (attempting) to learn it with Naughton's Colloquial Slovak, and Lorinc' Beginning Slovak (a 521 page tome,) and the Internets, of course.

My mother's people come from Michalovce.

I voted "no" because I'm already learning Czech. It would be nice, though, to pick up another language with nearly unparalleled ease - assuming I didn't get the two woefully confused.

@johnklepac: I am afraid that you would indeed mix them up if you learned Czech and Slovak at the same time. You should probably get quite good at one (and only then begin with the other) to see the (sometimes really subtle) differences.

But of course I don't want to discourage anyone! ;) If all you need is to be assured someone is here to help you, then I promise I'll do my best to answer any questions you might have, correct your mistakes, and provide every bit of assistance you might need to help you make progress in Slovak :yep: I'll be glad to see this forum as active as some of the others here on Unilang!
