Share your Conlangs!

Postby aforl » 2012-04-26, 18:45

Hi all, let's share your conlangs!

Rule:
1. Translate this sentence into your own conlang: The wrecked ship was found near the Island of Cyprus.
2. Using colours, colour the words "ship", "found", "near" and "Cyprus" in your sentence!
3. Post your sentence below the previous one, accumulating all the conlangs.

[English] The wrecked ship was found near the Island of Cyprus.
[Singa] Polwe'de jun'ka cuel'ad Kyprus'de dory beng'ji.

Âperuz actually means "was found". Mironese doesn't use past participles in this fashion, so there isn't an exact correspondence with English, even on the morpheme level.

The same with Nithalos nadeila. I just highlighted the whole word.

It's quite interesting to compare the litteral translations:

Miwonša: Ship destroyed found-was island-at Cyprus-of.
Nithalos: Destroyed ship close Cyprus-of island-at found-was.

Different order, but the constituents are almost the same ;)

Interesting! I have yet to find anyone's conlang who has the same word order as Nithalos on this forum.

Adding Laefêvëši and, following the lead of Plusquam and hashi, also glossing it.

Mirona's word order is actually rather similar in this context. The main difference is that it puts "near the island of Cyprus" in the opposite order.

Correcting Mirona and adding gloss.

[Prydonian] Cæ Soıpres ılȷuʃotʃou c à delán ðeɴllet à nóŋ.
[Pythian] Isɛ lu imokta ɛwemaʃɛpunɛ wim iporna in Sopras pitutsono.

That... was exhausting. Still haven't worked the kinks out of the last two (they share a nearly identical grammar - with very free word order - but have absolutely no vocabulary in common). I'll probably come back and redo these in a week or so...

Hey Basta, welcome to the forum... may I recommend you to read the Leipzig glossing rules? If you know the most common abbreviations for grammatical functions, glossing your translations will get much easier ;)

There is absolutely no objection to learning by doing, but reading helps you a bit more to understand why you do something this way and not the other way. Furthermore, morphological glossing was not invented by conlangers, but by professional linguistis, therefore there are clear and unambiguous conventions as in every other science, too. Of course you know all that (but I'm also writing this for those who might be less informed), but what I want to point out is that good conlangers really have to be able to make use of scientific working methods as there are no better ways to describe one's conlang that exactly. In my opinion, knowing how to gloss ones' translations is at least as important as knowing how to use the IPA instead of creating own weird phonetic transcriptions ;)
