She's vain, superficial, high maintanance and materialistic

Vain: kiêu ngạo
Superficial: nông cạn, thiển cận
Materialistic: nặng về vật chất, thiên về vật chất, coi trọng vật chất
Translation: Cô ấy kiêu ngạo, nông cạn, ,nặng về vật chất

It's very highly unlikely that this will happen

highly unlikely: rất không thể, không thể rất cao. Tuy nhiên người VN thường sẽ nói là "thật sự không thể"
Translation: Việc này sẽ xảy ra là rất không thể. Người VN thường sẽ nói là "Không thể có chuyện này xảy ra" và kèm theo nhấn giọng

This time I will pay for the meal, because I don't want to be in your debt.

Translation: Lần này tôi sẽ trả tiền cho bữa ăn, bởi vì tôi không muốn (mắc or mang) nợ bạn

In addition to Nghia's reply, for completeness, "high-maintaince" means (of a person, paticularly, a girl or woman) "demanding a lot of attention" , that is, "luôn muốn được (người yêu) quan tâm đến".
I'm sorry, now I can't figure out a short vietnamese phrase to fully and exactly describe the word in order that it could be fit well into the sentence to the translation.
Please point out every grammar mistake I make in any of my texts. Thanks

It's actually more polite than that. And they're talking about dating.

Sorry but you're just a lot younger than me. I don't date people younger than me.

Scientific paper = bài báo khoa học/nghiên cứu khoa học/báo cáo khoa học/công trình khoa học depending on the situation :)
Tôi kể người nghe chuyện Phố-trong-sông,
chuyện những mùa Đông đi qua thời con gái.
Bóng đổ dài, bước chân người mê mải
Gió chở mùa về,
hoang hoải cả giấc mơ..

Thanks so much! :)

Here's another translation request, but a more colloquial one. What does "hix" mean? It is usually used in chats or emailing between closed friends. I think it's something like "khiếp" and expresses "being shocked" or something like that. Does anyone know?

That's the internet way of writing "híc", an onomatopoeia for crying (the hicuppy kind). Basically it's like a smiley - :-( or :'(

(But not really, because the user doesn't actually mean they're sad. Kinda like how "lol" doesn't mean being amused, I guess.)

Cf. haizz - a sigh

Hi there,

in my signature I used in the last sentence "Cảm ơn". I wonder whether it is also possible to use "Cảm ơn trươc"? At first I wrote "Cảm ơn trươc", but it was corrected into "Cảm ơn" by a user here. Unfortunately I forgot to ask why back then.

Does "Cảm ơn" sounds more native than "Cảm ơn trươc"?

Thanks in advance

"Cảm ơn trước" sounds impolite because of what you said in the signature then by using the "!" it then make it sounds very rude. It would be better if you use "Cảm ơn trước nhé!", "Cho tôi xin cảm ơn trước!" or "Xin cảm ơn trước!" instead.

It's best to write "Cám (Cảm) ơn các bạn!" there, imho. After all, why should it matter if it's trước or sau?

Thanks f0r the answers.

Here's a question about another expression of courtesy. This time it's about the "please". How would you translate for example the "please" in

Please do this for me.

Would this be an accurate translation?
Hãy đề nghị làm cái này cho tôi nhé.

It sounds very formal in my opinion. I would like to use the please-phrase to talk to a broader audience of friends and acquaintances on facebook though.

Thanks in advance. Regards

That's wrong. What you wrote is broken, but it could be understood as "Please request [them??] to do this for me."

Neutral-ish: Làm giúp <me> cái này nhé.
100% Northern: Làm hộ <me> cái này nhá/nhé.
100% Southern: Làm (giúp) dùm/giùm <me> cái này nha/ha/he.

korn wrote:I would like to use the please-phrase to talk to a broader audience of friends and acquaintances on facebook though.

Pronouns would be your biggest obstacle there.

Wouldn't the following line solve this problem?

"Các bạn ơi, làm hộ [cái này] cho mình nhé."

Re: Translation requests

Hi there,

I just looked up "tính đức" with Google translator. I was expecting a meaning that combines "nét tính" and "đạo đức". Yet I found out it means "sex". Which was quite surprising, since it didn't fit in the context. But when I looked up for "đức tính" it gave me the searched word: "virtue".

So, in this case I "flipped around" a word and I got it's "opposite" meaning (....in a broader sense...) , which is quite interesting...... it's like flipping a coin a get the opposite site of the coin.

I'm wondering now, was this just coincidence or are there more words like that (words you can switch and get the opposite meaning)? And how are those kind of words called, meaning does Vietnamese have a special category/ a certain name for these words?

Thanks in advance.

That's because "tính đức" isn't a word. GTranslate can't find anything like that so it disregards the accents and settles for the closest match - "tình dục", or sex.

"Nét tính" isn't a word either. What dictionary are you using?

But... who's to say sex is the opposite of virtue?

I bad one I guess.

It's a bilingual dictionary (Ger-VN/ VN-Ger). Published in the former GDR - so it was published before the end of the cold war. :)

It even contains words not even Vietnamese are familiar with. These words were derived from old Vietnamese, I've been told. I spent some time learning some of them not knowing no Vietnamese would use them. >.<

It even contains errors in the German part as well.

I do wonder, how this dictionary could have been published.

BTW: How would you translate the following sentence?
“Tìm hiểu nét tính khí của trẻ”

source: http://tinycollege.edu.vn/thu-moi-tham- ... lege-1648/

EDIT: hmmm... I guess "tính khí" belong together....

Hi there,

How do you translate "logistic" in Vietnamese? Several dictionaries have suggested the translation of "logistic" is "logic". This can't be accurate, can it?
