Kurdish song

Postby eskandar » 2008-07-10, 21:36

Bahman Ghobadi (Iranian Kurdish director) sings this song at the beginning of one of his interviews. It's very nice, but I only understand a few words of it. I was wondering if anyone knows what it's called, what it means, or where I can find a recorded version?

ey ke min giriftarî tom
sheydai bejn u balî tom

ey ke min giriftarî tom
sheydai bejn u balî tom

lew rojewe tom dîwe
eshqêk le dilim chespîwe

le to ciwantirim nedîwe
ey ke min giriftarî tom
ey ke min giriftarî tom
ey ke min giriftarî tom
.

The interview is here.

I asked someone to translate it into Persian. He has written the poem more completely:

ئه ی که من گرفتاری توم ــــــ شیتی ورده خالی توم
له و روژه وه توم دیوه ــــــ عشقت له دلم چه سپیوه
له تو جوانترم نه دیوه ــــــ ئه ی که من گرفتاری توم
هه لم بژاردووی به دلی خوم ــــــ به چاوانت سویند ئه خوم
من به ته نیا هه ر هی توم ــــــ ئه ی که من گرفتاری توم

Zor supas!! I was dying to know, as it's such a pretty song. :D I can understand some of it now, since I know a little Kurdish and the words are similar to Persian, but can you help me translate some of the words?

-What is the meaning of tom? It must be a form of to, right?

-Can you give a literal translation of this sentence: sheydai bejn u balî tom? I think bejn means length, right? And does u mean "and"?

-Does le mean "from"? What's the difference between le and lew?

My two cents worth:

eskandar wrote:-What is the meaning of tom? It must be a form of to, right?

Can it be tum and contraction of tu+im (Persian: to+am)?

Kurdish: ey ke min giriftarî tom => Persian: ey ke man gereftâre toam (gereftâratam)

I think it is like Persian's "ghadd o bâlâ", which is used to praise somebody's stature and overall body shape.

Kurdish: sheydai bejn u balî tom => sheydâye ghadd o bâlâye toam (bâlâ'tam)

tom does not mean yours, it means - to hastam in farsi. le is از in farsi lew comes for le+ew which means (from that) in farsi: از آن
