Learning resources

Postby TheKickInside » 2009-12-08, 20:14

This is based on the thread in the Persian forum. Just share what resources you've used to learn Hindi/Urdu (web pages, courses, dictionaries, grammars, etc), and feel free to ask for recommendations. Hopefully, this can come to be a very useful resource.

Here is a Devanagari course: http://www.avashy.com/hindiscripttutor.htm

And here is a free online course called A Door Into Hindi: http://taj.chass.ncsu.edu/

GRAMMARS

Hindi: An Essential Grammar is very good, but unfortunately, doesn't appear to be available on the US Amazon. The presentation is very clear, and whenever there's something I encounter in my studies that I don't quite understand, a quick perusal of this usually clears it up. I paid about $37, but the dollar has continued to slide against the pound since then, so the price with shipping is probably in the 40s now.

I have not used Introduction to Hindi Grammar, but it has very positive reviews and is available in the States.

Here you will find some PDF resources that Rupert Snell developed to go along with his books in the TY series. There are worksheets, crossword puzzles and even a guide to linguistic terms you may encounter in your studies.

DICTIONARIES

Teach Yourself dictionary is actually quite good for a beginner's dictionary. It has a decent vocabulary selection, as well as a summary of the main points of Hindi grammar in the front.

It seems we already had a thread for this, which was just recently created. I suggest the two threads be merged.

Hindi: An Essential Grammar is indeed available on the US Amazon.

C. M. Naim's Introductory Urdu and Readings in Urdu are online for free here. There are some audio files for help with reading Urdu poetry here.

For online Urdu dictionaries, I usually turn to UrduWord, which leaves something to be desired, or else to the dictionaries of Platts or Shakespear. There's also an Urdu-Urdu dictionary online here; it looks very good but I'm not quite advanced enough yet to make use of it.
Please correct my mistakes in any language.

 What?! Why couldn't I find it? That would have saved me the hassle of ordering it from the UK. Oh well, at least I have it now...

Oh its very very very good! So is Teach Yourself Hindi! Living Lanaguge is more focused on the grammar and Teach Yourself is more conversational but I have both and like them both. They both do a very great job!
