Morphosyntactic alignment

Postby Ragno » 2014-06-04, 18:14

Hello, my name is Borja, I'm an estudent of Lingüsitics and Aplications at the UCM (Universidad Complutense de Madrid).

This term I have a subject called Tipology, and for the final exam we have to do a dissertation about a foreign lenguage covering the following aspects: Introduction, typological morphology, gender and the one who's driving me mad, Morphosyntactic alignment.

I'm having a really bad time trying to figure out wich type of language is Afrikaans, I can't find any examples or information about it. I've been working with a gramatic called "A Grammar of Afrikaans" wrote by Bruce C. Donaldson, but it's quite old and I think it's a bit outdated.

Could you help me to solve my problem? I just need a little explanation about it and some examples on both verbs, transitive and intransitive.

If anyone knows spanish i can send you my dissertation so you can read it and see what is about.

Dankie, and sorry for my bad english

Hi there!

Don’t know how deep you have to dig yourself into the depths of transitive and intransitive verbs, but in my opinion that boek by Donaldson published in 1993 is a good reference of grammar to work with. It is certainly not that old to be completely useless.
Transitive and intransitive verbs are discussed in my edition from p. 297-299.

A few sentences with verbs used transitively as well as intransitively:
te draai = to turn

Die man draai die wiel. (The man turns the wheel.) - transitive (Afr. oorganklik)
Die wiel draai. (The wheel turns.) - intransitive (onoorganklik)

te brand = to burn

Die vuur brand my hand. (The fire burns my hand.) - transitive
Die hout brand. (The wood burns.) - intransitive

te ry = to ride

Ek ry fiets. (I ride a bike.) - transitive
Ek ry vinnig. (I ride fast.) - intransitive

The verb 'doen' (to do) and 'maak' (to make) are always transitive.

Die kinders doen hulle huiswerk. (The children do their homework.)
Die kinders doen.* (The children do.) is not correct.

Ek maak die gordyne oop. (I open the curtains.)
Ek maak. (I make.)
In het middelpunt staan: [flag=]nl[/flag] [flag=]nl-BE[/flag] [flag=]af[/flag] [flag=]de[/flag][flag=]hr[/flag] [flag=]sr[/flag] [flag=]ru[/flag] [flag=]pl[/flag]
Heel hartelijk bedankt voor elke hulp!
Ich bin für jede Verbesserung dankbar.

Weerwolf sums it up quite perfectly.
Openbaring 21:6
"Verder sê Hy vir my: Dit het klaar gebeur. Ek is die Alfa en die Omega, die Begin en die Einde. Aan elkeen wat dors het, sal Ek te drinke gee uit die fontein met die water van die lewe, verniet. "
