names of swedish letters in IPA

Postby roger.keays » 2005-11-29, 0:05

Hi all,

I've been searching the net to try and find the names of Swedish letters written in IPA but couldn't find them anywhere. Does anybody know where I should look? I've made the following attempt but I'm sure there are many errors (especially with the vowel-sounds):

Code: Select all

a [a]
b [bɛ:]
c [cɛ:]
d [dɛ:]
e [ɛ:]
f [ɛf]
g [gi:]
h [hɔ]
i [i:]
j [ji:]
k [kɔ:]
l [ɛl]
m [ɛm]
n [ɛn]
o [u:]
p [pɛ:]
q [kʉ:]
r [ar]
s [ɛs]
t [tɛ:]
u [ʉ:]
v [vɛ:]
w [dʌbl vɛ:]
x [ɛks]
y [y]
z ?
å [o:]
ä [æ:]
ö [œ:]

Cheers,

Roger

Code: Select all

a [ɑː]
b [beː]
c [seː]
d [deː]
e [eː]
f [e̽f]
g [geː]
h [hoː]
i [iː]
j [jiː]
k [kʰoː]
l [e̽l]
m [e̽m]
n [e̽n]
o [uː]
p [pʰeː]
q [kʉː]
r [ɛɹ̝]
s [e̽s]
t [tʰeː]
u [ʉː]
v [veː]
w [ˈdɵbe̽lˌveː]
x [e̽ks]
y [yː]
z [ˈsæ̝ːta]
å [oː]
ä [æ̝ː]
ö [øː]

That's it. Though usually, except for when you have to be specific or when you actually say the whole alphabet out loud, you just call <w> "ve".
And <u> is not really [ʉː], but actually an endolabial [ʏː], but there's no IPA for that.

Edit: I see now that the diacritics are a bit hard to see, but you can just change the font size in your browser to see it better.

I didn't write [æː], but [æ̝ː], a raised [æː], as you might have seen. You may as well say that it's a lowered [ɛː] too, since that's the same thing.

[æːw]?? That's weird. Did you mean [ʉːw] (})? I'd say that the standard is a endolabial [ʏː] anyway, but there is very little difference in sound between that and [ʉː].
Long <a> is [ɑː], for sure. Though in southern Sweden around Gothenburg I can imagine it being [ɒː] or similar.
