Beginning and ending a letter

Postby Prosper_Youplaboum » 2011-10-19, 15:06

Hej

I'd like to send an e-mail in Swedish to a scholar I don't know yet.
What should I write at the beginning and at the end of my e-mail? (like, the equivalent of "Dear Sir" or whatever at the beginning, and then "yours faithfully" or sthg like that at the end). I have no idea of what you'd write in Swedish, I can't find on the internet nor in my dictionaries...

Tack så mycket!

I would like to know that as well!

Unfortunately for your query, Swedish has been deformalised during the previous half-century, so I do not think that any such words are used anymore. Sweden is nominally VERY equal, although not in reality.

I might head the letter with: Till (namn+tjänstetitel+adress)

Leave a few blank lines

And then begin with: Hej!
Followed by the letter's main text
dklgsölgk sökgjerghk sdkjdööl sdglk
fdghlketähl dlkdhkt ogkerk gkgerk (random text)

And end with some phrase like: Vänligen / Högaktningsfullt /Med vänlig hälsning
Followed by your name (and title/address)

But I am autistic-ish, so I might have broken some to me unknown rules by this formulation.

Jag är rebell: jag sockrar teet, saltar maten, cyklar utan hjälm, och tänder glödlampor.
(Ovanstående var förut, nu försöker jag minska sockret och saltet, och har gett upp mejeriprodukter.)

If you end with "Högaktningsfullt", you may as well open with "Min ädle herre", inflect verbs for plural number and spice it all up with some ity and tillfyllest.

"Vänligen" is okay I guess, but "Med vänlig(a) hälsning(ar)" can't go wrong.

Isn't it too informal to use simply "Hej" at the beginning? Maybe I'm mistaken but it sounds to me that I'm going to write "Hi !" to a scholar I don't know and I don't feel at ease

Somewhat intimate (example):

    Käre/-a XXX,

    YYY

    Din tillgivne,
    ZZZ
Somewhat non-intimate (how most people - including me - write by default):

    Hej,

    YYY

    Med vänlig(a) hälsning(ar),
    ZZZ
Your choice. :yep:

But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright Brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
