Difference between surie/suriu/viso gero

Postby Erpelmama » 2014-05-17, 15:27

Labas!
I have a question.
The Lithuanian book I am learning with says that goodbye means surie or suriu. But it doesn't explain which is used when.
My Lithuanian dictionnary says that goodbye means viso gero.

Can anyone explain me the difference and when I use which term?
Ačiu labai in advance!

The words "surie" and "suriu" are wrong.

Lithuanian for "good bye" is "viso gero." It is formal, and it literally translates to "all good." You can also often hear the shortened version "viso" (less formal).

Alternatively, you can say "iki pasimatymo," which is akin to the French "au revoir." If you want to make it informal, then just shorten it to "iki."

The one you were referring to was probably "sudie," which means "farewell."
Check out my project with interlinear translations (or, you could say, 'subtitled books') at Interlinear Books

....surie or suriu...

– might have been:

sudie, sudieu, sudiev (< su Dievu „with God“) – „goodbye“

...another informal „goodbye“: ate
