Beginners' Corner (Acemiler Köşesi)

Postby Multiturquoise » 2014-10-02, 13:00

I've opened this thread for new learners and beginners of Turkish. People whose native language is Turkish or who can speak Turkish fluently will correct the texts on this thread, but don't forget to add the English translations of the texts which you will write. It would be easier to correct if you added the English translation of your text.

John, bu kadar dille ilgilenmen çok ilginç. Sormamda sakınca yoksa, bölümün nedir? :-]

John, it's interesting that you're interested in so many languages. If you don't mind me asking, what's your major?

Teşekkür ederim. Aslında adım Vijay. Geçen yıl lisaniyat bölümünden mezun oldum. Master diplomasım var. :)
Thanks. Actually, my name's Vijay. I graduated from the linguistics department last year. I have a master's.

You can use one of the words: "filoloji", "dilbilim" or "lengüistik" instead of "lisaniyat". The word "lisaniyat" is of Arabic origin, and I've never heard of that word from anyone other than you. :)

Thank you again, but isn't filoloji (philology?) different from dilbilim and lengüistik (linguistics)?

I've personally never heard either lengüistik or lisaniyat in Turkish… And as far as I know, 'Dilbilim' and 'Filoloji' are the same thing.
Vijay, Do you ('you & your classmates' intended) learn Turkish at the faculty [lit. school] or are you learning it on your own?

Kendi kendine öğreniyorum. Maalesef okulda hiçbir zaman öğrenmedim ve artık oraya gitmiyorum.
I'm learning it on my own. Unfortunately, I never learned it at school/at the faculty, and I'm not going there now/anymore.

I'm sorry for not having written anything at all here for a long time.

Although Austin is the capital of Texas, it's different from the rest of the state. Most people in Texas are conservative, but Austin is more liberal, especially downtown.

And I live in Istanbul, and the municipality of the district in which I live is left-wing. Most people in Istanbul are also conservative, especially in districts like Sultanbeyli and Ümraniye. But, on the contrary, there are also municipalities in Istanbul which are left-wing (despite the fact that the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality is a conservative municipality), especially Kadıköy and Maltepe.

By the way, most municipalities in Turkey are governed by conservative mayors. I actually didn't want to talk about politics.

Devam etmeli. Hadi, bir şeyler yazın!

I think this is a useful corner for people who have just started learning English. It should go on. Come on, write something!
