Latin Translations

Postby Mikey93 » 2013-09-28, 15:12

I am in my last year of High School and I took up Latin, mainly because it's the language from which French evolved, and I am really fond of French. Another reason is that I simply did not have any better subject to pick up.
I am absolute beginner.
Can you please translate these sentence below for me ?

Puella in scholā cum magistrā bene labōrat.
Puella, properā in scholam!
Fēmina puellārum indūstriam laudat.
Industriā glōriam patriae parāmus
Puella magistram salūtat.
Magistra ā puellā salūtātur.
Sï agricolae bene labōrant, ab incolis laudantur.
Puellae in scholïs ā magistrïs bene ēducantur.
Poëtae dē patriā cantant.
Sï puellae bene labōrant, ā magistrïs laudantur.
Industria agricolārum laudātur

Thank you in advance.

:hmm:
Well, interlinear translation: correct sentences should be formed by yourself.

Puella in scholā cum magistrā bene labōrat.
the girl - in school - together with her lady teacher - well - works/is working.

Puella, properā in scholam!
girl -, haste - to school!

Fēmina puellārum indūstriam laudat.
the woman - of the girls - the assiduousness - praises.

Industriā glōriam patriae parāmus

with assiduousness - the glory - of the father-land - we acquire.

Puella magistram salūtat.
the girl - the lady teacher - salutes/is saluting.

Magistra ā puellā salūtātur.
the lady teacher - by the girl - is (being) saluted.

Sï agricolae bene labōrant, ab incolis laudantur.

if - the farmers - well - work -, by the inhabitants - are praised.

Puellae in scholïs ā magistrïs bene ēducantur.
the girls - in schools - by the (lady) teachers - well - are educated.

Poëtae dē patriā cantant.
the poets - of the father-land - sing.

Sï puellae bene labōrant, ā magistrïs laudantur.
if - the girls - well - work -, by the (lady) teachers - are praised.

Industria agricolārum laudātur.
the assiduousness - of the farmers - is praised.

Just asking: what's with the ï (i with diaeresis) instead of ī (macron) ?

Salve, Babelfish!
Equidem nihil aliud esse puto nisi mendum typographicum sive orthographicum. Nescio an Mikey93 parum diligenter illas sententias scribendo imitatus sit.

Doesn't -ntur refer to they were (gerund)?
Amāntur is They were loving.

Erras, amice, "amantur" enim passive dicitur: "they are (being) loved"; "they were loving" > Latine: amabant (imperfectum).

Sorry for spamming this thread, but I thought this would be an appropiate place to ask given the thread's name.

I took this photo in the Dome of Magdeburg this Sunday, could anyone tell me what it's about?

Szia Levike! Salve, Levike!
In the first place I transcribed the inscription:

Heus viator
conduntur heic reliquiae
reverendissimi ac nobilissimi domini
Ludovici a Lochow
in Zeitz haereditarii
herois eximii
cui cum decanatui in metropolitana
hac basilica per XXIX annos summa
prudentia famaque integra praefuisset
reipublicae evidenter profuisset bonorum
nemini obfuisset tandem acerbissimo piorum
cum luctu humanis proh dolor
anno aetatis LXX
Christi MDCXVI mense Septembri
exemto monumentum hocce posuere
haeredes
nepotes eius ex fratribus moestissimi.

And now the German translation which I tried to explain in English (excuse me, my English is very very bad  ):

Höre, Wandersmann, (Hark, wayfarer)
hier liegen bestattet die sterblichen Überreste (here are buried the relics)
des höchst verehrenswerten und edlen Herrn (of the most reverend and noble lord)
Ludwig von Lochow,
eines außerordentlichen Ehrenmannes (of an extraordinary distinguished man)
von erblichem Adel inZeitz (of heriditary noble birth in Zeitz)
Er hatte dem Dechanat in dieser (He had presided over the deanery of this metropolitan)
Metropolitanbasilika 29 Jahre lang mit höchster (basilica 29 years with utmost)
Umsicht und unbescholtenem Ruf vorgestanden, (prudence and untouched reputation)
er war für das Gemeinwesen von offenkundigem Nutzen (he had been evidently useful to the commonwealth)
und hatte niemandem von den Gutwilligen im Wege gestanden. (and had not hindered any man of honour)
Doch endlich wurde er unter bitterster Trauerbekundung der Gottgefälligen (But at last he was with most grievous sorrow of pious people)
aus der Welt der Menschen – welch ein Kummer - (separated from human affairs - alas-)
im Alter von 70 Jahren (at the age of seventy)
im Jahre 1616 nach Christus, im Monat September, (A. D. 1616, in the month of September)
gerissen.
Dieses Grabmal errichteten (This monument was erected)
die Erben, (by the heirs)
seine zutiefst traurigen Enkel von der Brüderseite.
(his very sorrowful grandsons, the sons of his brothers)

I am absolutely sure that you'll be able to understand the meaning of the inscription.

Thank you.

I was really curious about it's meaning, probably mostly because of the skull decoration.

Although I didn't expect to read that much "self-praise". :nope:

Es ist die typische Sprache, die man auf einem Epitaph im 17. Jh. findet, aber ich glaube nicht, dass es ein "self-praise" ist; denn die Erben haben den Toten mit diesen lobenden Worten geehrt.

"Mittelalterliche Bescheidenheit" in diesem Fall.
