Latin Music

I couldn't find a thread about Latin music(except for the one about your favorite Latin song, but that's not exactly what I wanted). Anyway, Latin songs are a bit difficult to come by it seems. Though this Wikipedia article is useful.

Here are some songs I like:

This one is really fun. Diablo Swing Orchestra- Ballrog Boogie:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsmAF9cVPm4

According to my friend, Diablo Swing Orchestra has more songs in Latin. I haven't seen any others yet, if I do then I will post them.

Alright fellow Black Sabbath fans, Rondellus is a band that took some Black Sabbath songs, changed the lyrics to Latin and medieval-fied them. Here's one made from the Wizard. Magus:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y66XDhiync

Check out their album Sabbatum for more similar ones...

This song is from a anime called Elfen Lied. It's a pretty one!
Lilium:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAHJIyfUSwU

From another anime, Fullmetal Alchemist. Lapis Philosophorum:

Faun is my favorite! They have a few songs. Here's one:

Also see: Unda, Satyros, Tempus Transit

Rhapsody of Fire- Ira Tenax:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hk0Q8R1UZPw
And see: Epicus Furor, In Tenebris

Carmina Burana, of course:

I'll end this post and put more later, since this is getting a little full.

Nice! 8-) Are there lyrics available, though? My listening comprehension is awful in my non-native languages... Ira Tenax did include subtitles, but the music wasn't to my taste :?

I think he was wrong actually.

Yep! You can just do a google search and find them.
Here's Balrog Boogie and Lilium, for example.

Here's my favorite song from Carl Orff's Catulli Carmina:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yDco98NeQ8

Catullus 8:
Miser Catulle, dēsinās ineptīre,
et quod vidēs perīsse perditum dūcās.
Fulsēre quondam candidī tibī sōlēs,
cum ventitābās quō puella ducēbat
amāta nōbīs quantum amābitur nūlla.
Ibi illa multa cum iocosa fiebant,
quae tū volebas nec puella nolebat,
fulsēre vērē candidī tibī sōlēs.
Nunc iam illa nōn vult: tu quoque impotēns nōlī,
nec quae fugit sectare, nec miser vīve,
sed obstinātā mente perfer, obdūrā.
Valē puella. Iam Catullus obdūrat,
nec tē requīret nec rogābit invītam.
At tū dolebis, cum rogāberis nūlla.
Scelesta, vae tē! quae tibī manet vīta?
Quis nunc tē adībit? Cui vidēberis bella?
Quem nunc amābis? Cuius esse dīcēris?
Quem bāsiābis? Cui labella mordēbis?
At tū, Catulle, dēstinātus obdūrā.

I wish I could do classical singing; it'd be so fun to sing along. Well, I wish I could sing well at all :(

These two groups try to reconstruct ancient Roman music- most doesn't really have lyrics, but I'll throw them in anyway:

I like it. How do they go about reconstructing it?

I don't know much of anything on music archaeology and I haven't found anything with a lot of information on either groups' methods. Here's some info I could find:

From Musica Romana's website:
Therefore, musical scientists, musicians and archeologists try to find out the probable sounds of ancient instruments experimentally, by reconstructing the finds as close to the original as possible.

From Synaulia's Wikipedia page:
In the absence of a system of musical notation for the period in question, the reconstruction and study of ancient musical expression was based on comparative studies of iconography, textual analysis, social studies and customs, also drawing from paleorganology, ethnomusicology, archeology and historiography.

The richness of the iconographic documentation, the abundance of tested theories and numerous literary connections facilitated the study and reproduction of a wide range of antique musical instruments, helping to determine, among other points of interest, their melodic and harmonic possibilities and acoustic quality.

I'm impressed with what they both came up with, however they did it.

The Mediæval Bæbes are quite awesome :) Though it appears that "bæbes" is just "babes" deliberately misspelled, kinda weird name for a classical music band...

I listened to Corvus Corax's album Cantus Buranus II (2008) till I couldn't do it anymore. The album is just great, just search for it on YouTube.

Here's a couple songs:

Quid agam

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7v7_mMBxgU

Mundi delicatio dulcis est et grata,
Eius conversatio suavis et ornata.
Ecce merces optime conspice nitorem,
Haec tibi conveniunt ad vultus decorum.

Mundi sunt deliciae, quibus aestuare
Volo nec lasciviam eius devitare.
Hae sunt odoriferae quas si comprobaris,
Corporis flagrantiam omnem superabis.

Heu, vita praeterita, vita plena malis,
Luxus turpitudinis, fons exitialis,
Heu, quid agam misera, plena peccatorum,
Quae polluta palleo sorde vitiorum!

Pro mundano gaudio vitam terminabo,
Bonis temporalibus ego militabo.
Hoc unguentum si multum cupitis,
Unum auri talentum dabitis.

Nil curans de ceteris corpus procurabo,
Variis coloribus illud perornabo.
Aliter nusquam portabitis.
Optimum est,
Optimum est.

Ingordin et Ingordan

Omne genus daemoniorum, caecorum, claudorum sive confusorum
Attendite iussum meorum et vocationem verborum.

Per sigillum Salomonis
Et per magos Pharaonis
Omnes vos coniuro
Omnes exorcizo.

Ingordin, Ingordan.

Per tres magos Caspar,
Melchior et Balthasar
Per regem David
Qui Saul sedavit
Cum iubilavit
Vosque fugavit.

Omnis creatura phantasmatum,
Quae corroboratis principatum
Serpentis tortuosi,
Venenosi,
Qui traxit per superbiam
Stellarum partem tertiam,
Gordan, Gordan;
Ingordin et Ingordan, Ingordin et Ingordan,
Ingordin et Ingordan,
Gordan, Gordan,
Ingordin et Ingordan.
