Malay - Indonesian

I have been wondering for a while now, but haven't found the answer. How similar are Malay and Indonesian? Are they mutually intelligible?

Indonesian and Malay are mutually intelligible.
In fact, Indonesian is based on Malay.

Some spoken accents may be quite unintelligible though.

Interestingly, at least from my experience, many Malaysians seem to be understand Indonesian quite well, but not necessarily the other way around, especially the spoken variations.

I suppose the difference between Malaysian and Indonesian is comparable to Swedish and Norwegian and Danish.

Malaysian and Indonesian language are almost similar. Once you know how to speak Indonesian, it'll be very easy for you to understand Malaysian as well, so once you learn to speak Indonesian, you don't have to learn Malaysian language anymore.

Malaysian and Indonesian language are almost similar. Once you know how to speak Indonesian, it'll be very easy for you to understand Malaysian as well, so once you learn to speak Indonesian, you don't have to learn Malaysian language anymore.

Yet, the Malaysians will always hear that you are speaking Indonesian.
It's sort of "I do understand what you mean, but we say it different way".
Like British and American English.

the different only in accent ... Indonesian easier than Malaysian . cuz Malaysian accent a bit hard comparing with Indonesian .

99.9% similar i think.
and yes they are mutually intelligible at maybe 100 or less words per minute spoken.

the most prominent difference of these two dialects is in the choice of words, and in the intonation. both are nice, and it is interesting to hear them.

the choice of common words is a little tricky. if the inappropriate common words are used in one dialect, people may look at you as they would a Brit in America looking for a 'fag'.

And could anybody point out the main cultural differences? or country differences? or which are the major characteristics of malaysians and indonesians?

jepang/jepun - Japan

Polandia/Poland - Poland

Some country names and vocab is diferent.

Yes, correct. Again, like someone else said, it's just like American, and Canadian English. Some words have different spelling in Canada than in the U.S, and yes, also some of the vocab is different, but that's a small paticularity.

Indonesian and Malaysian are different, you can find it in accent and some meaning of vocabulary. Let's say in Indonesian language, the word SERONOK, the meaning of this word is TABOO, but in Malaysian language, the meaning is SPECTACULAR.
also, the Malaysian sentence : Mari kita berpusing-pusing (the meaning is let's take a stroll).
on the other side, the meaning of PUSING is headache.
