The Owl and the Pussy-cat - to be translated into Malay

Postby pimpoapo » 2008-04-01, 15:09

Hi,

I'm looking for a translation of the Owl and the Pussy-cat by Edward Lear on behalf of my friend who is making a collection of this poem in as many languages as he can, just for fun. He's 97-year-old and this hobby gives him a great pleasure.

The Owl and the Pussy-cat

I

The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
'O lovely Pussy! O Pussy my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!'

II

Pussy said to the Owl, 'You elegant fowl!
How charmingly sweet you sing!
O let us be married! too long we have tarried:
But what shall we do for a ring?'
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong-tree grows
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood
With a ring at the end of his nose,
His nose,
His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.

III

'Dear pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?' Said the Piggy, 'I will.'
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon,
The moon,
The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.

He started about a year ago and we managed to get it in more than 40 languages so far. Because we are running out of resources I decided to ask help from communities who dedicated to different languages.
It doesn't need to be a professional translation.

Here's a website that I started to set up to share all the translations that we've got so far. Some of them was made by poets but most of them just by friends or people who we run into in different places (waiters of the local restaurant, nurses from hospital, etc). They did the best they could and they just did it for fun and because they wanted to add their own language to this collection.

http://pimpoapo.itrello.com/bompa/

The site is under construction, at the moment just a flash version available.

Here is the list of the languages that we've got so far (01/04/2008):

Afrikaans, Basque, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Esperanto, Estonian, Finnish, French, Frisian, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Irish Gaelic, Korean, Kyrgyz, Latin, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Malagasy, Norvegian Bokmål, Norwegian Nynorsk, Polish, Portuguese, Portuguese (Brazilian), Romanian, Russian, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog (Pilipino), Thai, Turkish, Welsh

If you could translate it into Malay that would be a great help for us.
For exchange I always mention who did the translation at the end of the poem and if you wish it can be linked to your website or email address.

Thanks again for anyone who will help us.

Hi! The translation that I did is quite bad, haha. I even feel weird while reading again and again. It needs a prefessional translator, I thought. However, this is the piece, maybe someone else will recheck and correct the sentences. By the way, is it a bedtime story?

The Owl and the Pussy-cat
Burung Hantu dan Kucing Pussy

I

The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
Seekor burung hantu dan kucing Pussy ke laut
In a beautiful pea green boat,
Menaiki sebuah bot cantik bewarna hijau terang,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Dengan sedikit madu, dan wang yang banyak,
Wrapped up in a five pound note.
Kira-kira lima pound
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
Burung hantu melihat bintang-bintang di langit
And sang to a small guitar,
Dan bernyanyi sambil memetik gitar kecil,
'O lovely Pussy! O Pussy my love,
'Oh sayangku Pussy! Oh Pussy cintaku,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
Kamu benar-benar cantik Pussy,
You are,
Cantik,
You are!
Cantik!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!'
Kamu benar-benar cantik Pussy!'

II

Pussy said to the Owl, 'You elegant fowl!
Pussy berkata kepada burung hantu, 'Kamu si burung yang bergaya!
How charmingly sweet you sing!
Mendayu sungguh nyanyianmu!
O let us be married! too long we have tarried:
Marilah kita berkahwin! Terlalu lama kita menanti:
But what shall we do for a ring?'
Tetapi, bagaimana dengan cincin?'
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
Mereka berlayar jauh, dari hari ke tahun,
To the land where the Bong-tree grows
Sehingga ke kawasan dimana pokok Bong tumbuh
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood
Dan disana kelihatan seekor Piggy sedang duduk
With a ring at the end of his nose,
Dengan sebentuk cincin dihujung hidungnya,
His nose,
Hidungnya,
His nose,
Hidungnya,
With a ring at the end of his nose.
Dengan sebentuk cincin dihujung hidungnya.

III

'Dear pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
'Pig, kamu bersedia untuk menjual dengan harga satu syiling
Your ring?' Said the Piggy, 'I will.'
Cincin kamu itu?' Jawab Piggy, 'Saya bersedia'
So they took it away, and were married next day
Jadi mereka mengambilnya, lalu berkahwin keesokan harinya
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
Di atas kawasan bukit di Turki
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Menikmati hidangan daging dan buah-buahan,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
Makan menggunakan sudu,
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
Dan berduaan berpegangan tangan,
They danced by the light of the moon,
Mereka menari di bawah cahaya bulan,
The moon,
Bulan,
The moon,
Bulan,
They danced by the light of the moon.
Mereka menari di bawah cahaya bulan.

Dear najwa,

Thank you very much for your great effort to doing a translation in such a short time...
If you don't mind shall we wait a couple of weeks before I put it up to the website, if no one is going to improve it than this version will be Malay translation...
I forgot to mention it doesn't need to be a word-by-word translation as long you keep the meaning of the original...
This poem is one of Edward Lear's nonsense poems... You can find more here...: http://www.nonsenselit.org/Lear/ns/index.html
The word "runcible" was used in this poem was invented by him... Nowadays a runcible spoon means a fork-like spoon or a spoon-like fork... :)

Haha, salam.

Pimpoapo:
I tried not to translate it word by word. Anyway, I'll recheck it again and ask my freinds here.

Ostsee:
Actually yes we translate the word pig as 'babi' in Malay. However, I found it very harsh word. And as a muslim, we in Malaysia don't use it regularly. Instead of saying 'babi', we say 'khinzir' (I think this is an Arabic word). Even in oun newspaper, tv we use khinzir. Maybe for certain group of people like gangsters or uneducated people use the word babi. Moreover, babi is used when there are people who fighthing among themselves,,, and say:

- Babi kau!
- Dia itu macam babi!
- Babi betul kau ini!

Although it's just a word refer to an animal, but because of Muslim can't eat it so it is consider as a word to make people down. By the way, lets wait for others..

Bravo Najwa!! Couldn't do it better myself. FYI, the word "babi" is used most for negative connotation esp when somebody's swearing, belittling or decrying someone or something...just my 5 cent opinion.

Hi again,

I just would like to update the address of the site where all the translations for this poem are available:

www.bompa.org

I had to change it because free hosts come and go, but at least this address will be permanent, doesn't matter which hosting company I use. :)
