This is a traditional song in Malay from Sumatra called "Mak Inang" (although I'm not sure whether the video itself is from Sumatra or not) with the lyrics in the subtitles:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQHZd8mj0oU
And this is "Jalur Gemilang," a patriotic Malaysian song, also with the lyrics. I remember seeing it on Channel 2 at the hotel last time I went to Singapore on the way to India and we got the option to stop over for a day, because Channel 2 was a Malaysian channel. It played (and probably still plays) first thing in the morning on that channel every day. The video on that channel was a bit different from this one but not all that much:

These are two traditional songs, both with the lyrics in the subtitles. :) One is a ghazal from the city of Muar, which is apparently supposed to be the birthplace of Malay ghazals. It sounds so much like traditional Indian songs! It's just called "Sri Muar Ghazal":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HV5ekOWwB-Y
The other is called "Dondang Sayang," which is also apparently the name of a genre of Malay songs:

Which one would you prefer, sir? Sri Muar sounded like Indian because of the ghazal's usage. It's like sitar but more simple compared to that sitar.

By the way, I am from Johore, the state where Muar is located. And Dondang Sayang originated on Johore's neighbour state, Malacca.

Sorry for the late reply, but:
DannyAlex wrote:Which one would you prefer, sir?

I'm not really sure. Maybe "Dondang Sayang" since it has a little less Indian influence and thus sounds more novel to me. The Indian influence in "Sri Muar" also appeals to me, though.

Oh, that's cool! Terima kasih! :)

Both of these are songs that are supposedly in Malay but are both from Sumatra rather than from Malaysia. This is a song called "Selayang Pandang" by Veri Afi (or Ferry Afi, as his name is spelled in this video). I think maybe "Melayu Deli" means it's in the Malay of the Sultanate of Deli:

Lyrics: https://www.last.fm/fr/music/Joe+Avati/ ... ng/+lyrics

The other one I think is supposed to be a song of the Karo ethnic group but IIUC is in Malay and not Karo. It's called "Bercerai Kasih" and performed by Layla and Sayful (or Syaiful as spelled in the video). The lyrics are in the subtitles:

I recently learned that Malay has a tradition of ghazal music, dating back to British colonial-era contact with India. Here are a couple of lovely examples. On the history see this work.

Yes, indeed. Melayu Deli is a Malay group but from Indonesian's side. Nevertheless, the Malay language spoken is almost the same if we were to compare with official Malay language spoken here in Malaysia. Karo is also an another Malay group.

Wah pertama kali mendengar lagu Dragon Ball versi Sumatera! Sungguh berbeza dengan apa yang saya dengar sewaktu kecil. :D :D :D

Ghazal is still popular in southern state of Johore, where usually the music piece is played altogether with a dance called Zapin. Later I will post some related video.

Thanks for all this information, DannyAlex! :)

Thanks for posting these songs! I posted another ghazal three posts above yours, and I was kind of shocked to find that one because it sounded really Indian, with sitars and everything! These two sound much more like my prototypical idea of a Malay ghazal.

The last time I went to India (over a dozen years ago!), my dad and I stopped over in Singapore and went for a tour, but honestly, staying in our hotel room was far more interesting because you could watch TV in 4-5 languages on channels from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Taiwan! One of the channels was a Singaporean Malay channel called Suria TV, where most of the time I couldn't see anything, just a yellow screen with some writing in Malay on it and instrumental music that sounded very similar to these ghazals in the background.

This is a traditional song from Brunei called "Kain Jong Sarat." The first comment to this video has the lyrics (in slightly non-standard orthography). I think this might just be in Standard Malay; it doesn't appear to be specifically Brunei Malay:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftqhDP-SwmU
This is a song from the 2013 ABU TV Song Festival (a non-competitive concert based on Eurovision), so I think it's fair to call it a pop song. This was Brunei's debut in the song festival. It's a song called "Salakah Aku?" meaning 'Am I to Blame?' and was originally sung by a Malay singer named Fakhrul Razi but was sung at the contest by Bruneian singer Qeez Idrus:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYQ8f8A9_kg
Lyrics: http://www.printlyrics.net/2014/10/fakh ... h-aku.html

So much better than Eurovision :D

Here are two more songs from Brunei that I think are probably in Malay, too (and not specifically in Brunei Malay from what I can see)! This is another traditional song called "Air Pasang":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kTXr-wfq28

Lyrics: http://supportbruneianartists.blogspot. ... asang.html

And this is apparently also a song in Malay from Brunei that's not in Brunei Malay:

These are two Singaporean songs in Malay. The first one is called "Semoga Bahagia" and has the lyrics in the subtitles. The video description includes a translation into English:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLTlSVj9CmE
The lyrics sound like classic Singaporean government propaganda.

This is another song from Singapore called "Tanjung Katong," apparently from a movie in Mandarin Chinese called That Girl in Pinafore (2013):

Lyrics: https://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/s/sin ... atong.html
