Trying to learn Bergen dialect of Norwegian

Postby brian.teal » 2016-11-05, 20:05

I have family in Bergen and I was trying to learn Norwegian, but they said it was the wrong dialect. So I am looking for a good resource for me to learn the Bergen dialect.

Hei Brian! :)

Velkommen til det norske språk forumet! :welcome:

One of the strengths of this forum is that it has been around for nearly 14 years and there's a tremendous amount of information that you can access here. :y: Learning the Bergen dialect is not an area of expertise for me, but I just did a forum search on "Bergen dialect" and got 42 matches and also found the following two threads:

Dialects

Dialect discussion

I hope the information in these threads will be of help to you. Lykke til! (Good luck!) :)

Takk!

I have looked through the forums as well, but didn't really see any resources on how to learn that actual dialect unfortunately. But yes, there is a wealth of information about the dialect itself, so I might have to learn a different one and then "translate" it into Bergensk.

There is no such thing as *Bergen dialect* unfortunately.
There are three Bergen dialects, socially.

1. penbergensk or fanabergensk, this is your regular 2 gender Bokmaal spoken with the Bergen accent, it is used by people living in the borough of Fana and adjacent rich parts of Bergen (like Paradis)
2. gatebergensk, this is the broad dialect, preferred by males outside the borough of Fana, and by some females outside the borough of Fana, also spoken with the Bergen accent, this accent is a funny mix of conservative Bokmaal and Nynorsk.
3. something inbetween

the closest you can get to learning the Bergen accent are audiobooks narrated by Bergen voice actors, these are written in Bokmaal, so the result is penbergensk/fanabergensk.

I don't know when she will come.
Jei vet ikke når hun kommer. (penbergensk).
Eg vet ikkje korti' hon kommar. (gatebergensk).

I am not alone.
Jei æ ikke alene. (penbergensk)
Eg e ikkje aleine. (gatebergensk).
