Lyrics of this song, please?

Postby Danie203 » 2016-04-30, 8:11

Hello :D Well, I've been searching for the lyrics of this song but I can't find them anywhere, and I can't understand Norwegian... could anyone please write the Norwegian lyrics for me? Thanks! :D

And if you can, I'd appreciate very much if you translate them into English, too. Thanks!

Haha, oh, God  This song! My grandma would sing this :P It's hard to make out some of the words, however... And because it's so old, I don't know what she means by "gi meg fri" Nowadays it means to get days off work or school, but she probably meant "free me" :) Horrible translation by me, though.

There will be a song with a strange melody
There will be a song that one day will have been sung
This song will say "Free me!"
Free me, free me

Have you heard it before?
It is sung by men
Over and over again
Everything is the same as before (?)
... around and listen

Yeah, we can feel it now, this [feeling] will never go away
Where there's censorship, where there's a wall
There, the hit/slogan will be "Free me!"
Free me

Maybe you are doing fine, so why would you then
Need a song like this - it's mostly in the way
Why would you free me?
Free me, free me

But all around the world
A lot of people live
Without a hint of ...
Want to be free

That's why there's a song with a strange melody
And if the wind was to shift, maybe then it is you
Who will have the need to say "Free me!"
Free me, free me

Could it be the same as Swedish ge mig frid (traditionally the d is silent), which means "give me peace"?

"Frid" means a personal peace rather than the absence of war, which is fred; for example, "rest in peace" is vila i frid, while "world peace" is världsfred.

Just a thought, it's hard to make it fit with the over-all lyrics after all.

That would still have been "gi meg fred" though :hmm: Or at least it should be.

I agree with your translation. The expression "gi fri" can be found in Norsk riksmålsordbok under "løse" (4 a): "slippe løs, gi fri (noget som har været holdt tilbake, har været temmet ell. lign.) så det fritt kan utfolde sig."

Feel free to add to my translation wherever necessary, by the way! I am on vacation and did it while I was waiting for the tram in Amsterdam :P It could definitely use a second pair of eyes.

Looks good to me! The only thing I'd change is this:

My understanding of "[d]et skal finnes en sang (...)" is that such a song presumably exists. So I would say "there's supposed to be a song (...)" is closer to the intended meaning. This also affects your translation of the second line, i.e. I'd change the first two lines into:

"There's supposed to be a song with a strange melody
There's supposed to be a song that was once sung
(...)"

What do you think?

Oh, and happy vacation – hope you're having a great time in Amsterdam! :)

Couldn't agree with you more :yep: It sounded a bit iffy when I interpreted it as the future tense, but I had to hurry :P

Amsterdam was great! I had forgotten how beautiful it is with all the canals :D

Kjære vene! Denne sangen hadde jeg helt glemt! Kjenner minnene strømmer på. Haha, og så å finne den her inne. Hvem skulle tro?
