8. In general, Norwegians are known to be humble, good-natured and friendly. Many people recognize Jante Law, a term used to describe a pattern of behavior associated with Scandinavians that frown upon individual success and achievement. Essentially, it is meant to teach people to be modest. As such, Norwegians try to see all people as standing on equal footing.
The tenets of the law are:
- You shall not think you are special.
- You shall not believe you are smarter than others.
- You shall not believe you are wiser than others.
- You shall not behave as if you are better than others.
- You shall not believe that you know more than others.
- You shall not believe that you can fix things better than others.
- You shall not laugh at others.
- You shall not believe that others care about you.
- You shall not believe that you can teach others anything.
abyssopelagic wrote:This is not an English-Norwegian/Norwegian-English dictionary. In other words, you have to know the word you want to look up in Norwegian. For translating English words (or words in your native language) into Norwegian, you can use sites like TriTrans (English, Spanish, Norwegian) and Google Translate.
This dictionary is useful for a lot of things. In addition to giving definitions of words, it will also give you information on what word class they belong to, what grammatical gender a word is (if any), and how to conjugate adjectives, nouns and verbs. (Which is why it can be useful to learners who are not advanced in Norwegian yet. Despite not being able to understand the actual definitions and example sentences given, they can, with the help of this guide, look up word classes, genders and conjugations.)
Looking up words
Start by typing a word into the search field. For looking up a bokmål (standard Norwegian) word, click the "bokmål" button; click the "nynorsk" button if you want to look up a nynorsk (New Norwegian) word.
Advanced search
You can also do an advanced search, by clicking the "avanset søk" (advanced search) link located next to the search buttons.
You will then be given some options to choose from under the search field. You can select one option/filtering on each row (at the same time). After you've selected the option(s) you want, hit one of the search buttons.
- bøyningsformer = conjugation forms/patterns
- fritekst = (free) text
- oppslagsord = entries
- uten/utan aksent = without accent
- med aksent = with accent
- norsk alfabet = Norwegian alphabet
- ae, oe, aa for æ, ø og å = ae, oe, aa for(/as/instead of) æ, ø and å
- XML-entitet for æ, ø og å = XML entity for(/as/instead of) æ, ø and å
Tusen takk (danke schön) for oppdateringen, dunkelwald.dunkelwald wrote:Om Nynorsk-/Bokmålsordboka:
Det er diverre ikkje mogeleg (lenger?) å finna ordet i det andre skriftspråket på denne måten. Når ein leitar etter "mogelegheit" til dømes, får ein berre nynorskresultatet og ikkje bokmålsordet "mulighet"...
About the Nynorsk-/Bokmålsordboka:
It is unluckily not possible (any longer?) to find the word in the other written language in this way. When one searches for "mogelegheit", for example, you just get the Nynorsk result and not the Bokmål word "mulighet".
