Not sure how I didn't see these two requests! So sorry, Salieri!

What a bummer = "Så synd/dumt" / "Det var synd/dumt"
I can't help it = "Jeg kan ikke noe for det" (stress "for")

What does veien går til mens den går mean?

Sorry for the late reply. The correct idiom is "veien går til mens man går". A figurative translation would be: "The road paves itself while one is walking (on it)". It is a way of saying that the outcome doesn't rely on planning ahead.

A somewhat related idiom in English would be "we'll cross that bridge when we come to it", although the Norwegian idiom doesn't say anything about what one should do, so much as to state that the outcome only requires that one "does it" (and it will work itself out).

I was just thinking about a few things we could do to improve this forum and I'm sure other members will have their own suggestions. How about if we start a new thread/topic with "Ideas for Improving the Norwegian Language Forum" (or something similar to this) as the title? Would the following title be correct?

Ideer for å forbedre den norske språk forumet

Har noen andre har et forslag til et emne tittel?

Does anyone else have a suggestion for a thread title?

På forhånd takk for hjelpen! :y:

Excellent idea! How about "Idéer til å forbedre det norske språkforumet"? Or perhaps "Forslag [suggestions] til å forbedre det norske språkforumet"?

Since it is obvious which forum we are attempting to improve, how about using this thread title instead?

Sounds good to me! Although I think I'd use the definite declension of "forum": "Forslag til å forbedre dette forumet".

Hello All,

Some time ago I heard a Norwegian word that was used to describe the sludgy stuff/grounds left at the bottom of a cup of coffee. I think I recall the beginning of the word starting with an English G or J sound. Any help in identifying the word is greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Hello!

(Kaffe)grut is probably the word you're looking for.

Velkommen til det norske språk forumet, SMc! :welcome:

Just out of curiosity, how did you happen to find this forum?

To be honest, I'm not even sure if there is a word for this in English. :hmm:

However, you did an excellent job with your description. :y:

Could you please give an example where grut is used by itself in a sentence.

På forhånd takk! :)

Actually, I don't believe I can! While "grut" is a word, it is (almost?) never used by itself. Everyone uses the word "kaffegrut" instead. Only if "kaffegrut" has been used in a previous sentence is it okay to say "gruten" (in reference to the aforementioned "kaffegrut"). An example:

"Kaffegrut kan brukes til jordforbedring. Siden gruten er porøs, vil den bidra med luft, og sette fart på komposteringen."

Takk for hjelpen og takk for godt eksempel på hvordan du bruker "kaffegrut" og "gruten" i en setning. :y:

Er det et norsk ord for "schlepp"?

Schlepp - to haul or carry (something heavy or awkward).

Example:

He schlepped the bags of groceries home.
