How did you learn Basque?

Postby language learner » 2012-07-27, 15:11

I mean, there aren't that many materials as for more popular languages. So what technique did you use?
-Immersion (from tv, radio?)
-Textbooks (which?)
-Tandem exchange
-other methods?

I have completed the volumes 1 to 3 of the textbook Bakarka; I am starting volume 4 (there are 5 volumes!).
:)
The method is rather good but there are some occasional misprints.

Agree, the bakarka series is very advisable, save for occasional errors. I used it myself to make sense out of all the apparently conflicting rules in Basque the way they taught it at school...

Searching the web only gives results in French and Spanish - any chance it has a translation into English?

Hello, I only found it in Spanish (here in Spain).
Beside that, is it truly apt for self-teaching, as it claims to be on its cover? I got "burnt" in the past with such advertisements.

I remember looking through it when i was in Spain and thinking it was more suited as a classroom textbook, but i may be thinking of another book. Maybe it's worth a second look...

For English speakers, "The Basque Language: A Practical Introduction" by Alan R. King is really nice and more comprehensive than other courses i've seen.
Guk euskaraz, zuk zergatik ez?
