Postby medusa » 2005-11-08, 9:45

Hello, I am in the uk and urgently need to contact and Estonian friend, via phone.

Could anybody tell me how to say "Can I speak to "...."" (or whatever the customary equivalent is in Estonian).

Also, can you tell me how it ought to be pronounced.

I really do need help this morning if at all possible.

Hello !

I hope it isn’t too late… and I’m only a beginner in estonian. It need to confirm.

I would say :
« Tere !
Ma sooviksin rääkida [name]+le , palun !
»
It means : « Hello ! I would like to speak to …, please ! »
And « Tänan väga ! » for « Thank you ! »

You pronounce this as it comes :
‘r’ must be rolled
‘a’ is a closed ‘a’
‘ä’ is an open ‘a’ (like cat)
‘oo’ and 'ää' are long
‘u’ like food

Although it's late to help Medusa I have to make a little correction here: ma sooviksin rääkida [name]+ga. rääkima + le = to tell smth to smb, rääkima + ga = to speak with smb.

It depends:
Genitive - Ma räägin sulle ühe loo (I('ll) tell you a story [and I definitely tell you the whole story until the end of it])

Partitive - Ma räägin sulle ühte lugu (I('m) tell(ing) you a story [I'm just telling but it is not known am I gonna finish it]).

Nominative - Üks lugu jäi sulle rääkimata (one story remained untold to you)
