Interesting. Are there many soviet Russians still in Estonia who can differentiate /s/ and /z/?

There are also people, who paid attention in the first grade when alphabet was taught. :D
The differences are also taught in Russian classes (5th grade).
Estonians usually do not pronounce z, š and ž correctly because they think they would sound too fancy.

In other finno-ugric languages (especially Karelian) they use these kinds of sounds. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karelian_language#History)
For example mees is mieš in Karelian. :D

In Finland I saw a newly published book called "Livvikarjalan kielioppi". It was quite cool. :D
I can give some examples of Karelian languages in my later posts.

Interestingly, when I was in 1st grade (which I think was in '94), then there were no š, z or ž in the alphabet that was taught to us (maybe it was just a weird school). So for me those letters were as foreign as x and y, until when in later years I found out that they are in the official alphabet - I was like: WTF?

I don't think that š, z and ž are too fancy for some Estonians, they are just quite difficult to pronunciate (for quite many Estonians). Normal Estonian consonants are very easy to pronunciate: you have to deviate your mouth minimally from its "default" shape/location to get those sounds out. But all foreign sounds require quite much force to be applied to the muscles that aren't used to something like that - so those sounds tend to disrupt the natural flow of speech.
Eesti keel (et) native, English (en) I can manage, Suomi (fi) trying to learn, Pусский (ru)&Deutsch (de) unfortunately, slowly fading away

I remember that when teacher got to the letter c and said that it should be pronounced as "tsee" then one smart boy asked: "But what about Russian s?" Maybe she then thought that it was better not to hide the information. :D Anyway, we learned the sounded z and ž and even learned that for some people y is ü and for others its i. I also remember the "kaksisvee-kaksisvee-kaksisvee" joke. :D She didn't tell us explicitly about sounded d, b, and g, but she sometimes pronounced them somewhat foreign-alike in foreign words. And everybody's mother tongue was Estonian. :D She also gave English classes for interested students. The school was Tallinna Pääsküla Keskkool (Gümnaasium) and the year was 1997.

I found some interesting resources for learning Estonian. :)
The magazines Inseneeria and EAS have their stories on the Internet in PDF and for some stories also in MP3 format. So you can listen and then read the stories.

Direct links for interesting stuff:

http://inseneeria.eas.ee/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&id=83%3Amai-2012&layout=default&Itemid=27

http://hei.eas.ee/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&id=112:2012-jaanuar&Itemid=68&layout=default

(The magazines were government funded and are now discontinued.)

The original post hasn't been updated since it was created in 2010. Perhaps it is time to put all these links together in the OP?

It looks a wonderful sity; aitää

I know this multilingual on-line Estonian course, with many dialogues and videoes: http://www.panglosskool.eu/

I just list my knowlegde in Estonian sites:

- an Estonian Grammar ... in Estonian! - http://www.eki.ee/books/ekk09/
- course - Mylanguages /Learn Estonian (good site) - http://mylanguages.org/learn_estonian.php
- course - Speak Estonian - http://www.speakestonian.co.uk/
- dict. powerful dictionary with examples: http://dict.ibs.ee/
- dict. Morphoanalizator: http://www.filosoft.ee/html_morf_et/
- dict. dictionary: http://kiisu.eki.ee/
- Dictionnaire Estonien-Français: http://www.lexilogos.com/estonien_dictionnaire.htm
- thesaurus: http://www.cl.ut.ee/ressursid/teksaurus ... rus.cgi.en

- culture: Institute of the Estonian Language (see also Dictionaries) http://www.eki.ee/index.html.en
- culture: Estonian Nation Official Site: http://estonia.eu/
- culture: U can search something interesting here: http://www.estinst.ee/eng/information-booklets/
- Estonian Swadesh List: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix: ... adesh_list
- TONS of translated songs from Estonian: (I put Võro, so you can see there's more): http://lyricstranslate.com/en/language/south-estonian

And my humble suggestion: the more you study the less you learn: hundreds of wonderful sites, Estonian is such a fascinating and difficoult language, that all you need is no bulks of study-material, but directly practicing language: would you like to know how I really learnt something in Estonian? Translating jokes ... (forget courses): let's see how many words I forgot:

Janune mees kõnnib kõrbes ja otsib veet. Tulle tuleb vastu eksinud eesel, veetünnid seljas. Mees näeb seda ja hüüatab rõõmsalt - "Eesel, sa oled ingel!" - "Kas tõesti? Miks sa kohe ei öelnud?", vastab eesel ja ländab minema.

for jokes in Estonian: http://www.naljad.ee/

I also would like to learn proverbs and popular sayings in many languages: do you know something of this kind, about Estonian? >> http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Estonian_proverbs

I've just come across this encyclopedia about Estonia. Most (all?) articles appear in Estonian, English and Russian:

Hey!

I know that this topic is more than outdated, but I've been struggling to find online resources for learning Estonian. If anyone ever comes across this, please help me :D These sites that you guys have posted more than a deacde ago are mostly unavaiable now. Also, I would start from literally zero Estonian knowledge.

However odd may seem to reply to a thread like this (in 2018), keep in mind that hope never dies. :D

There is a very useful course for beginers: https://www.keeleklikk.ee/en/welcome
There are also online dictionaries here: https://www.eki.ee/EN/dictionaries
If you already know some Estonian, here is a monolingual Estonian dictionary, where the definitions are easy to understand, I recomend it: http://www.eki.ee/dict/psv/

Here are some other links which might be useful for beginners (I personally didn't use them much though):

Tere tulemast (welcome)!
Here are some suggestions. Hopefully others will add to it (most of my links are online courses, but I think there are other sites that might be more "bite-sized" for beginners). On this forum, when a post is made on a topic, it sends an email to those who had posted there before (unless they've unsubscribed or changed their email), so even though this is an old thread your question will probably be found by others too.

Eesti keele ja kultuuri kursused: Tere tulemast Eestisse! online language course
Keeleklikk online language course (requires registration, but it's free)
Eesti Keel ja Meel online language course (requires registration, but it's free, register here)
Eesti keel e-õppes sõnavara omandamine online vocabulary course (requires registration, but it's free)
Eesti keele harjutusi iseseisvaks tööks online course
Keeleveeb online dictionaries (searches multiple Estonian resources at once)
Eesti keele süntesaator gives case forms for Estonian nouns and conjugations for Estonian verbs (useful once you've gotten into grammar)

LOL, Irusia! We posted at the same time and our lists looked so similar that at first I thought I had somehow double-posted mine. I'm glad to see we have included some different links though. :D

I saw your post after editing mine. I was also surprised that they are so similar.
Maybe that's because there aren't that many valuable resources for Estonian learners on the internet.

That's true. But I think the ones that are out there are pretty good quality. I think it helps that Estonia is so web-oriented and they've created some good online resources meant for immigrants in Estonia. Many other languages have tons of resources out there but it's difficult to sift through the poorly-designed or error-laden ones to get to the useful sites. With Estonian there aren't that many to choose form but generally they're all good.

Another resource for learning Estonian is Speakly. This year you can sign up for the Estonian course for free. You just need a coupon code which you can find from the Estonian Integration Foundation (instructions in English) or EV100 programmi kingitused (instructions in Estonian). You can use the code to sign up for the course for up to one year.
It is free through support from Estonia's Integration Foundation (Integratsiooni Sihtasutus) as a gift to learners of Estonian for Estonia's anniversary celebration this year. It is not normally a free program and I am not sure whether or not it's okay to post the coupon code itself here, so instead I'm linking to the sites that give the information. That way, the organizations that made this resource available for free this year can be recognized for providing this opportunity.

Asta Õim - Eesi-Vene Vestmik is a good Estonian-Russian phrasebook that seems to be very comprehensive in terms of listing various synonyms and colloquial usage (not your average "traveller's phrasebook"). Issuu has it online at the link. For anyone who knows Russian, or for anyone who knows enough Estonian to be able to use the Estonian portions untranslated, it looks like a good resource for learning a variety of phrases and the type of wording and usage that is appropriate in various situations. I'm impressed by the depth it goes into for the topics it covers - random colloquial stuff like "Läheks õige Maret vaatama, ta olevat haige", phrases for writing business letters and resumes, telephone calls, etc.

Next week, September 23 through September 29, is Estonian Language Week (Eesti keele nädal)!
To help you celebrate this event that I didn't even know existed, here are some new links - courses, games, and information. Two of the links even have contests with prizes! And access codes for free study materials!

Keeletee e-course (intermediate-level course)
Eesti keele õppemäng Käämuk (exercises for object cases/sihitis)
Sihitisesõnastik ASP (glossary for objects/sihitis)
Õpime käändeid (self-test/game for learning case forms)
Eesti keele postkaardid (vocab for beginners) & in pdf format
Sõnasarnasuse mäng: eesti sünonüümid (synonym matching game)
Estonian Tryouts (pronunciation of words; requires microphone)
keelEST Newsletter (at the moment, just a few of these links, but it's new, so it looks like a good site to watch)
Eesti keele nädal (about Estonian Language Week)

For anyone looking for a comprehensive online course, I'd recommend Keeleklikk for beginners (A0-A2) and Keeletee for intermediate learners (B1+). Both require registration, but it's free - the registration just allows you to keep track of your own progress, etc. For both of them, there is a real live teacher you can interact with who will correct your work and correspond with you. It's rare to find a comprehensive program that will offer that for free!

You can also add yourself to a map of Estonian language learners here. The Estonian Language Institute is hoping to reach three million Estonian learners/speakers for Estonian Language Week; let's help them reach that goal. Image
