APPI!!!

Postby Isabelleprado » 2008-10-30, 21:26

Guys,

I'm trying to understand this sentence bellow:

"Eestikeele õppimisele ma ei alla anna"

Well, I asked to an estonian friend to make a translation for me into estonian from "I won't give up learning estonian" Turns out that I just understood nothing of what he's written, except maybe "ma ei alla anna" = I won't give up.

Why "eesti keelt" was spelt "eestikeele"? Mida tähendab "õppimisele"?

Other than that, in the sentence "kas sa võiksid selle minu jaoks ära tõlkida" what means: jaoks? ära tõlkida?

Any help is welcome
SUUR-SUUR AITÄH :partyhat:

"I won't give up learning Estonian" = "ma ei jäta eesti keele õppimist", or "ma ei lõpeta eesti keele õppimist"
But more 'estonian' will be "ma jätkan eesti keele õppimist".

Why "eesti keelt" was spelt "eestikeele"? Mida tähendab "õppimisele"?

ahem... How good is your friends Estonian?

"ära" + certain verb expresses some finished action.

ära teha
ära osta
ära müüa
ära tõlkida

Alike this are also expressions like
üles kaevata
maha müüa
etc.

The verb alone may express both action in process, or finished action.

Miljon tänu, Arvi!

The way you've written the sentence made it a lot easier to me, really! :) Aitäh kirjutamast!

Hehe! What did you mean by "how good are your estonian friends"? Do you think they are making fun of me?

He meant to say that your Estonian friend's Estonian skills aren't very good if he misspells "eesti keele." I agree. Many locals can barely write a sentence without mistakes, it's depressing really.

Yes, and you can be called "language freak" if you try to correct some idiots' grammar and spelling. Sad that some of those try to teach foreigners...
