Why are there so many silent p's, as in "ps", "pn", and "pt" words? Or are they supposed to be pronounced?

They're borrowed into English from Greek. But the rules of English phonotactics do not allow initial pt-, ps-, or pn- sounds, so the p is rendered silent.
