:good4u: I am so happy!
If ego is pleased with my work it should be perfect! :D
I mean you are so demanding!

I notice that translating texts helps me understand more and more written Greek. Maybe not for specific words and stuff but it definitely helps me get used to the structure of the Greek language. I can`t wait for more texts.

Ego, are you avoiding coming to msn and the chat because you promised me something?

Every Greek verb has 4 stems to remember: 2 in the active and 2 in the passive form. Usually one of the stems (the present stem) is common in the active and the passive form so in total you have to remember 3 stems. If you know them, you can conjugate all tenses. This would be another way to learn verbs, different than the one students usually follow.

For example the verb ονομάζω = to name:

Active form

Present stem: ονομαζ
Aorist stem: ονομασ

Passive form

Present stem: ονομαζ
Aorist stem: ονομαστ

From the above 4 (3) stems you can create all tenses if you know some simple rules:

Active tenses: ονομάζω, ονόμαζα, ονομάσω, ονόμασα
Passive tenses: ονομάζομαι, ονομαζόμουν, ονομαστώ, ονομάστηκα

(respectively: present, imperfect, subj. aorist, aorist)

These are all the 1-word tenses. The rest are formed from the above plus some particle (να, θα..).

The problem is to memorize the stems for each verb and as far as I know there's no list online or in some book :? . Unfortunatelly (?) no tutor uses this system. They prefer the traditional one.

About the verb υποβάλλομαι the present stem is υποβαλλ, the active aorist is υποβαλ and the passive aorist is υποβληθ

Ακόμα ένα προβλήμα είναι ότι δεν ξέρω καλά όλους τους χρόνους ρήματων και τις κατάληξεις των. Πρέπει να διαβάσω περισσότερο για τους.

-The conditional speech is formed with the particle θα + imperfect:

Θα έλεγα
θα έδινα
θα μιλούσα (there is no [s]θα μίλησα[/s])

For some reason all my foreign friends mistaken there :hmm:

- των sounds archaic in the way you used it:

τις καταλήξεις των.

In demotic we say τους:

το σπίτι τους.

Of course it sounds illogical because genitive should be used there and των is indeed the genitive form:

το σπίτι αυτών --> το σπίτι των

τους is the accusative (αυτούς --> τους) but colloquially it has replaced the genitive there. In Crete however people still say "τωνε".

-You cannot say για τους. After prepositions you have to use the full word αυτούς. It's like in Hebrew. You cannot say "chashavti al oto". You say "chashavti al ze".

-Finally about your brave effort to use an ancient expression:

κατήγαγα is indeed the aorist but the -η- there is just the internal augment (α --> η). In non past tenses, the α remains

Την έκφραση βρήκα στο λεξικό επίσης :)
OK this is getting too complicated for me in Greek... So - I've found the verb άγω without the prefix but also with no aorist specified. I guess the aorist stem was γαγ- or something similar, and in the past it augmented to something like έγαγα, while in the future etc. it would be just γάγω. Therefore, adding κατά resulted in κατήγαγα in the past but θα καταγάγω in non-past forms.

Indeed. :) There are some things that ego didn't correct, but I don't know why. Maybe he thought they were little mistakes? For example, when you write "τις ανώμαλες μορφές των ρήματων" (it should be "ρημάτων" - accent on the 'α'). When a native doesn't correct things I don't feel like I should, either. :p

Babelfish wrote:Και δεν μου απάντησες. Πάντα χρησιμοποιείται το αρσενικό γένος ("ο") σε τέτοιες περίπτωσεις, όχι το ουδέτερο "το";

I re-read that a few times to see if I understood it correctly. So, let me know if I got it all wrong. :p

Apparently you think that ego's correction means he's using the αρσενικό? Because he isn't. :-p "ό,τι" is one word (not the definite article - o - plus comma, plus "τι"). Notice you don't even have a space after the ",". It's all placed together, "ό,τι". This basically means "whatever", as in "whatever I do". So, "από ό,τι νόμιζα" means "[different] from what (ever) I thought". So there is no article (no "ο" or "το") - "ό,τι" is one word, and there is no article in it. :)

Babelfish wrote:Κατάλαβα :?

"Κατάλαβα" is the equivalent to "understood", "got it" etc.. :D

I'd say "την έκφραση την βρήκα", but maybe I'm wrong. Ego will let us know. :)

Precisely. Here:

Ενεστώτας (present): κατάγω
αόριστος: κατήγαγα (elongation + duplication)
παρατατικός (imperfect preterite): κατήγα
Εξακολ. Μέλλοντας: θα κατάγω
Συνοπτ. Μέλλοντας: θα καταγάγω

Verbs like "εισάγω" and "εξάγω" follow the same pattern. :)

Interesting discussion here :) .

1. About θα νόμιζα / νόμιζα. Both are logical and grammatically correct but there is a slight difference in meaning:

θα νόμιζα = I would think but I didn't
νόμιζα = I thought

In your case, you did think that you should use the neuter article so you must say νόμιζα. After all θα νόμιζα is too rare.

2. About ό,τι it's as Kennedy said. The comma there is added in order to distinguish it from ότι. These two words have totally different meanings:

ό,τι = whatever, everything that
ότι = that (same as πως but more common)

3. About the "understood", as Kennedy said we mostly say "κατάλαβα". Then you can use the adjective κατανοητός which means "understandable" and "understood" but it's not a participle:

το κείμενο αυτό δεν είναι πλήρως κατανοητό = this text is not fully understood/understandable

4. About the verb άγω. It's only used as a second component today and never alone except in archaic speech. It's use is complicated for Greeks too.

Present stem: αγ
Aorist stem: αγαγ

As you can see the stems begin with a vowel and this means that in ancient Greek they would receive a temporal augment. I had written about that in the topic about the augment:

ego wrote:Verbs that started with a vowel had another type of augment: They shifted that vowel to some else. In particular the changes were as follows:

α --> η
ε --> η
ι --> ι
ο --> ω
υ --> υ
η --> η
ω --> ω

(temporal augment: it changes, actually lengthens the time -tempus- needed to pronounce the first syllable).

examples:

ακούω --> ήκουσα (aorist)
οικτίρω --> ώκτιρον (imperfect).

Modern Greek has abolished the temporal augment. Verbs that begin with a vowel don't alter it:

ακούω (to hear) --> άκουσα (I heard)
ορίζω (to command) --> όρισα (to commanded)

This is why you have κατήγα / κατήγαγα

A verb that has it as component is εισάγω = to import. So according to the stems I gave you, we have:

Present: εισάγω = I import / I am importing
Aorist: εισήγαγα = I imported
Imperfect: εισήγα = I was importing
Instant future: θα εισαγάγω = I will import
Continuous future: θα εισάγω = I will be importing

Mind that most Greeks mistaken here. The author of this message only learnt the above few years ago :oops:

I'd say "την έκφραση την βρήκα", but maybe I'm wrong. Ego will let us know

Here are the lyrics of a very nice song. The languages used is prose, not poetical and at the same time, there are some interesting expressions in there, so I think it's proper for you to translate it:

επί + acc. = to, on to, against
επί + gen. = on, in the direction of, in the time of
επί + dat. = at, on, upon, with a view to, in the power of

Don't let against confuse you. The meaning is not «to make a victory against» but «to make a victory on» so genitive is used. But anyway, this is ancient Greek.

- Πριν requires aorist subjunctive

Το επιχαίρω σημαίνει χαίρομαι με κάτι που έγινε και συνήθως έχει αρνητική σημασία, δηλαδή χαίρομαι για κάτι κακό. Προέρχεται από το επί + χαίρω δηλαδή to be glad on smth.

Παθητική μετοχή αορίστου δεν υπάρχει για το καταλαβαίνω.

Ναι, συνταχθ είναι το θέμα του παθητικού αορίστου (passive aorist stem) του ρήματος συντάσσομαι. Για παράδειγμα, συντάσσω μια έκθεση (lechaber).

Βλέπω ότι μπερδεύεις τα ποιος, όποιος, οποίος, κάποιος:

ποιος = who, which, מי, איזה
όποιος = whoever
ο οποίος (always with the article) = who, אשר
κάποιος = someone

Χαρ is the aorist stem of the verb χαίρομαι:

χαίρομαι = I rejoice
χαιρόμουν = I was rejoicing
χάρηκα = I rejoiced
θα χαρώ = I will rejoice
να χαρώ (subjunctive aorist, meaning varies)
χαίρε-τε (imperative. The singular is archaic and not used today unlike the plural which is a common greeting)

Σχεδόν τελείωσα να μετφράσω το τραγούδι, αλλά δεν κατάλαβα τον στίχο με την λέξη "φταις". Δεν γνωρίζω τέτοια κατάληξη :?

Υπέθεσα ότι "συνταχθ" είναι το θέμα του αορίστου κάποιου ρήματος. Εννοούσα να ρωτήσω ποιό είναι αυτό το ρήμα :P Φαίνεται ότι η ερώτηση μου ήταν αρκετά χάλι...

Και εννοούσα να πω "I will try to translate the song later" :oops: Το "επιχειρώ" δεν μπορεί να χρησιμοποιείται με την αυτήν την σημασία; (αν δεν μπορεί, το λεξικό ψέυδεται!)

Παρεμπιπτόντως: χαίρομαι (παθητική μορφή) --> θα χάρω (ενεργητική μορφή) :? Αυτό είναι κοινό, ή είναι ανώμαλο ρήμα;

POETRY? I'd love to!

Με λένε Nέρο, ο βασιλιάς της Ρώμης
Πολήγλοσσος αγαπά τα ελληνικά μου
πίθηκος μήλο Ιαπωνία εξαερωτήρας!
Μην με βλάπτε, παρακαλώ
Δίνω τα καλά αλυσιδοπρίονα στα παιδιά
αρχίδια! αρχίδια! αρχίδια! αρχίδια!

There may be a few more verses later.

ΟΚ, τελείωσα (μην διαβάστε αν θέλετε να προσπαθέτε σεις οι ίδιοι!):

Orpheas Peridis - You are hiding something from me

You are hiding something from me
You do not open your heart to me
And everything passes from my defective mind

Tell me what goes on
My heart endures me
That, which [even] if you tell it is not your fault, it is not mine either

Tell me if you love another, tell me if I lose you
I will write yet another song
The verses won't speak of lowly women
Of those who hold hearts as [game] cards

Even if you find another to love and I lose you
I'll go out to the streets and not know where I'll get to
To unknown places I will return, to sing

ΟΚ, δεν θα'μαι ένα ποιητής...

(ego, τι ήταν λαθεμένο με το "εννοούσα"; )
Ναι, κατάλαβα ό,τι είπες για τα ανώμαλα ρήματα. Βέβαιως, ο αόριστος "είπα" του ρήματος "λέω" μου φαίνεται παραξενότερος απο τον αόριστο "έγραψα" του "γράφω" :P Αλλά μόνο πρέπει να το ξέρω το θέμα.
