You didn't :) it's not like that, I just don't feel I want to focus on this right now or that there's something that could be achieved from continuing this discussion

Romani people were despised in Selendi, which is a district of Manisa province. Some people tried to lynch some Romani people there. There is also anti-Romani sentiment in Turkey. I oppose every type of discrimination unless it's positive discrimination. I also oppose racism.

I was shocked to find out one of my friend's dad was activey anti-Romani. In fact, most of his dad's family in Italy is :( . Even worse, he believes the myths associated with the Romani people (and even if some were true, there's a damn good reason, such as because of the discrimination against them).

I found this out some time in May or June, but revisiting this thread reminded me of it.

I sure hope this discrimination is restricted to Southern Italy too. I wouldn't like to hear the the North agrees.

Queste idee sono molto comuni per tutta Europa, quindi dubito che non ci siano nel Nord Italia.

Not just Europe either, Romani people are discriminated against all over the world. The nature of that discrimination varies considerably e.g. between Eastern Europe and North America, but it's hardly any better in one place than the other and if anything, as I think I've said before, it appears to be getting only worse, not better. The only country where (I'm pretty sure) I've ever heard a Romani person claim that Romani people may have been successfully integrated into the surrounding society is Iran.

Forse non totalmente assento, ma spero che ci sia meglio la situazione. Dubito anche che sia vero però.

Anti-Romani sentiment is quite widespread in the North too, actually I would argue that it's probably more common in the North than the South, after all we have a Northern League (a racist party with very strong anti-Romani views), whereas there's nothing of the like in the South.

"Lega Nord per l'Indipendenza della Padania"?

These people actually want to break the boot apart?

No, they don't look like they're terribly serious about seceding from Italy.

Sometimes they say they want secession/independence, at other times they say they just want federalism. Go figure...

Funny thing is that nobody seems to agree what the borders of the country of Padania are supposed to be, that's to say how far south they wanna go.

In Italy Lo Stivale (The Boot) is a nickname for Italy (look at its shape).

It's called the Boot here too.

And that absolutely sucks that it actually seems to be worse in the North :( But I can't say I'm surprised… just disappointed.

Ditto in German: der Stiefel.
Please correct my mistakes!
