349 MPs, population about 9.6 million.

Then there are county councils and city councils too, which work in much the same way as the parliament, except on county and municipal levels. The size of those vary, but where I live there are:
- 149 members of the county council, population about 1.6 million
- 51 members of the city council, population about 38,400

120 parliament members; population just got to 8 million. Seems we have one of the relatively smaller parliaments... which is good because we feel most of them are a waste of money anyway :evil:

Lazar Taxon wrote:In the US we have 535: 435 in the House of Representatives and 100 in the Senate. For example, my state has 160 in the lower house and 40 in the upper house for about 7 million people.

I live in a different state and we have the third largest english speaking legislature in the world with 400 members of the House of Representatives and 24 in the senate, thus a total of 424. Only the US and the UK are larger with 535 and 1410 respectively.

Russian parliament is divided into 2 chambers:
- Gosudarstvennaya Duma - 450 members
- Sovet Federatsii - 166 members
Population is about 145 million

Every member of federation (region, republic, autonomous district, city of federal importance (Moscow is one of them) has its own parliament too.
Moscow City Duma has 35 members. Population is about 12 million.

However Saint-Petersburg's parliament is bigger, they have 50 MPs, though population is more than twice less of Moscow's.

For Belgium:

- Federal parlement: 150
- Flemish parlement: 124
- Walloon parlement: 75
- If you add the Rat der deutschen Kulturgemeinschaft that’s another 24.

Population: 11 million.

Figure is fine, number of governments is however way too high.

To kill some time, I make charts.
These seem relevant in this thread. It'd be call if you guys make similar charts about the parliaments in your country.

I couldn't find a chart ready-made, so I quickly threw together an ugly one:

Image

These are not by the political parties per se, but parliament groups. The two guys who were kicked out of the Left party for dissenting on a vote formed their own parliament group together.

The web address is the source for the data.

That's a 43% representation if my maths is right. Impressive.
Cyprus is 10% (was 14% in 2006-2011 -our highest-, we are retrogressing)

Also, a bit off topic, but the 2008-2013 Labour-Centrist government had 4 female ministers out of 11 in total. (Originally 2/11, but after a reshuffle, two men were replaced by women).
The 2013-Present Conservative-Conservative-Centrist Government began with 0 female ministers. After the first reshuffle, it was 1 out of 11.

On some charters there's the wrong title (the 2nd and 4th ones should be Chamber of Deputies).

Italian Senate (main parties)

Percentages:

M5S: 46.2%

PD: 40.9% (previous Parliament: 31.1%)

PDL: 8.1% (previous Parliament: 9.2%)

Lega Nord: 29.4% (previous Parliament: 16%)

Lista Civica Monti: 16.6%

SEL: 28.5%

Italian Chamber of Deputies (main parties)

Image

M5S: 31,4%

PD: 37.8% (previous Parliament: 30,1%)

PDL: 26,8% (previous Parliament: 21%)

Lega Nord: 0% (previous Parliament: 18,6%)

Lista Civica Monti: 21,2%

SEL: 27%

Senate (in total)

Image

Female ratio: 27.3%, previous Parliament: 18.7%
Percentage increase: 46%

Chamber of Deputies (in total)

Female ratio: 31.4%, previous Parliament: 21.3%
Percentage increase: 33.33%

The Senate has 266 members, of which 33% are women and 67% are men.

The Andalusian parliament has 109 members, of which 48% are women and 52% are men.

Meanwhile, the most populous state in the Union has only 120 legislators overall (Assembly: 80, Senate: 40).

The German Wikipedia has a nice overview for Germany:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frauenante ... 8gesamt.29

The translations of the terms:
Wahlperiode = legislative period
Beginn der Wahlperiode = beginning of the legislative period
Ende ... = end ...
Prozentsatz = percentage
Frauen = women
Anzahl = number
Gesamtzahl Abgeordnete = total number of deputies

For the 2nd: WP = Wahlperiode

Made Greece as well.

Out of 300 members, 60 are women.
That's 20%.

Did one for TRNC as well.
The rate is 8%. So it's pretty much like the south, considering that they have 6 less seats in the parliament in the north. You also consider that most left-wing Turkish Cypriot parties boycott the TRNC Assembly because they consider it a puppet show run by Turkey, and left-wing parties are more likely to elect women than right wing parties.
