Enjoy your heavily protected borders when the median age in your country is 65.

We have a satellite state that is ready and willing to take care of the unwanted for us. It's also a safe country that has signed all those UN declarations and conventions on refugee rights.

The visa overstayer problem can be completely eliminated if a group of people can be arranged dedicated to sifting through the visa registry and calling out people whose visas have expired and have not officially left the country.

Or, alternatively, by simply not issuing the visas in the first place.

In confinement camps. That's not freedom.

Also, I just find it wrong to dump your #firstworldproblems onto poor countries such as Nauru.

If you know where they are and how to reach them.

Meh! They broke Australian law, so they're criminals anyway.

1) Nauru is one of the richest countries in Oceania.
2) They want to take our problems.

If more resources were put to it, I'm sure they could be found.

No, they're not.

1) Nauru is one of the richest countries in Oceania.

No, that'd be Australia. Nauru is 8 times poorer GDP-wise.

2) They want to take our problems.

They have no choice if you wave millions of dollars in front of them. That's just taking advantage of the poor folks.

If more resources were put to it, I'm sure they could be found.

Not all of them will be.

The boat people aren't refugees. They're mostly country-shopping economic migrants. Afghans and Tamils in Indonesia are not suffering from persecution.

As for visa overstayers, they're mostly from the UK. You're not going to say they're refugees, are you?

Well geez. We have no obligation to send them money. We aren't the ones that wasted their support fund away.

You don't know that for sure.

What the fuck

Afghans and Tamils don't come from Indonesia...

No-one in Australia cares about deporting British people, because they're white. Sorry Yasha, you're alone on this one.

Meh. It's not like they have rights or anything. They're foreign. Fuck 'em.

An illegal immigrant ate your baby sister or something? :? :? :?

Why don't people thinking like you all get born in poop-hole countries like Afghanistan... We'll see what attitude you would adopt living such a life.

It would be nice to deport all of them to Somalia or somewhere else with the low taxes they crave.

Really? The statistics I can find rank it fifth from the bottom in a field of thirteen. Where are the ones you found which put in at the top?

It's actually even worse than that: Nauru has no military at all, just a small police force. It relies entirely on Australia for its defence. So it's pretty disingenuous to talk of them "wanting" to accept an offer they can't refuse.

I've always heard a lot of criticisms about restrictions in the ammount of Brazilian immigrants in USA, EU and other developed countries. Such a situation was frequently called by many people as an prejudice against our country.

However, we've been receiving quite a large influx of Haitian immigrants lately. Ironically, the same people who blamed USA and EU for the so called "prejudice", are calling for restrictions on entrance of Haitians in Brazil...

I've read excuses such as "We are a very poor country too!" to "Their problems aren't our fault!"... I've even heard the "They will gonna steal our jobs!" one... And then, our government decided to approve such restrictions...

I hate this f**king hipocrisy... Where is the "reciprocity policy" and the "prejudice" now?! I'm very disappointed :x

I think his point is: If they are asylum-seekers, why didn't they seek asylum in Indonesia (or any of the other countries they passed through after leaving the jurisdiction where they suffered persecution)?

Personally I agree with the researchers at the Forced Migration Studies Programme in Witwatersrand when they point up a "false dichotomy" between economic migrants and other sorts of "forced migrants", so I don't consider the distinction particularly relevant. But there are people who do and, if you're one of them, it is a legitimate question to ask.
