"should". Your example would be "something that should be protected".

Hello,

Hopefully I'm using the right topic for this. I would appreciate if someone could check if these sentences make any sense. :)

漢字があまり必要じゃないけど、言葉の分かることと手伝う。しかし、多い子供の本とビデオゲームが漢字を使わないで、自分のメッセージをちゃんと上げる。
Kanji isn't really needed, although it helps with the understanding of words. However, numerous children's books and video games communicate their meanings fine without it.

でもさ、漢字は使うなら読むのもっとも簡単になると思います。たくさんな平仮名なら目に痛みがあります。時々言葉に迷うようです。

僕の書くのは下手なら、すみません。

Have じ and ぢ the same sound? :hmm: I'm little bit confused about the pronunciation of both of them. Thanks in advance. :)

Yes. Generally ぢ is only used where ち becomes voiced.

Ah ok, I understand now. When I watched at the Hiragana I noticed that there were equal sounds. I've understaden that there was obviously a rule, but there wasn't on the site that I've visited ;)

みなさん、こんにちは! Sorry I had a quick question about Japanese so I hope this is the right place for it. Anyway in my class we are learning negatives and so far we learned three of them.

じゃない です
じゃありません
ではありません

My teacher said the first one is used colloquially and informally while the other two are formal does this mean should I use the last two when speaking to someone older or higher status like a teacher, boss etc? or is じゃない です okay in all situations? ありがとう!

You're right. However, if speaking colloquially, I just use じゃない, not じゃないです - although it's perfectly ok as well :) The options in Japanese are endless ;)

As far as I know, there is another rule which says that ぢ is used also when there is ち whithin the same word

An example: chijimeru (縮める) 'to shorten (vt.)' → ちぢめる (NOT ちじめる!)

These same rules are applied also in the case of ず and づ (づ is used when つ becomes voiced or when there is つ within the same word) .

The pronunciation of じ/ぢ, and ず/づ is the same, namely [ʑi] (/ji/) for じ/ぢ and [zɯ] (/zu/) for ず/づ . However, these pronunciations show some variety in certain environments:

⇒ If じ/ぢ or ず/づ comes after っ or ん it should be pronounced as [dʑi] (for じ/ぢ) or [dzɯ] (for ず/づ) .

In addition to this, it might be good to bear in mind that there is variation between different dialects or even between each individual speaker. Especially, if じ/ぢ or ず/づ happens to appear in the very beginning of a word, it seems to be quite difficult to make any rules about whether pronunciation should be [ʑi] (じ/ぢ) and [zɯ] (ず/づ) or [dʑi] (じ/ぢ) and [dzɯ] (ず/づ) .

I hope this information was useful! :D
I can help you with these: [flag=]fi[/flag] & [flag=]ja[/flag] (+ [flag=]ain[/flag])
At the moment I need most help with this: [flag=]ru[/flag]

How would you translate these two sentances in Japanese?

"I often ate hamburgers when I was a child."

"Takeshi did not study much when he was in high school."

They are two sentences I have to translate for homework and I can't find the answer anywhere. :?
