日本語、文化、音楽など、ここに置いてください。

Anything relating to Japanese language, culture, music, or anything else - post it here.

<a href="http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/wwwjdic.html" target="_blank">Jim Breen's WWWDIC</a>
This is the best online dictionary. You can search for words, look up kanji, and search for kanji by radical and stroke count. Some of the kanji have stroke order animations and many of the words have translated examples.

This covers a huge amount of Japanese grammar, complete with explanations and examples.

[Obviously] the blog of the author of the abovementioned guide. It has some interesting posts on culture, slang, and other bits of grammar.

This is my favourite online dictionary. You can search in hiragana, katakana, kanji or romaji. Also has other resources, like a chat room, but last time I checked it everyone was chatting in English which is boring :/

Rikaichan
is an instant dictionary for Firefox that translates Japanese words into English as you hover your mouse over them. It's not on all the time unless you want to.

Furigana injector
is an addon for Firefox that injects furigana into Japanese text. As it is, the furigana will appear after the kanji, but if you also install this, it will appear above the kanji. You can adjust the amount of kanji it "furiganizes". This isn't on all the time unless you want to, either.

It's an interesting resource. Not much there, because it is a relatively new site, but it does have a pretty active forum.

Very interesting... and it even looks useful to get better acquainted with Kanbun. Thanks. :)

Etymological dictionaries

I was complaining a while ago that there was no Japanese etymological dictionary available on the internet, apart from Starostin's http://starling.rinet.ru/cgi-bin/response.cgi?root=config&morpho=0&basename=\data\alt\japet, which only contains very old words. (I have no idea why the link doesn't work here; just copy and paste it in your browser's address bar.)

But recently I found a more general etymological dictionary: 語源由来辞典 http://gogen-allguide.com/. It's all in Japanese and it contains only about 2000 words (and growing), but I found it quite interesting. I don't know who's maintaining it and what authority they may have.

The dictionary is accompanied by a place-name etymological dictionary: 地名由来辞典 http://chimei-allguide.com/. As you may know, just by looking at the kanji a place name is written with, you can never be sure about the actual origins of that name, even when those kanji seem to lead to a very plausible explanation.

Have fun.

Interesting! I really like that dictionary. I think I'm going to get rid of Rikai-chan.

ALMOST!

Haha, I use that dictionary too :)

PS: You could ommit 僕は and it would still make perfect sense.

SO CLOSE!

I think you're right. I used it because in the first sentence, the dictionary was the subject, then in the second sentence I was the subject, but now that I think about it, I didn't really need it.

I am here to study Hindi, but I realized that I can look through this forum for Japanese content. I think if anyone wants to learn, or just follow a chat forum similar to this one, http://www.yesjapan.com. They also have lessons and fun, easy games for paying members, plus a lot more. :D
