languagepotato's romanian

Postby languagepotato » 2014-06-25, 7:45

I'm doing the fluent in 3 months 1 week-starter, and what better language to start with than one of the languages i'm in love with but don't speak yet, so that's why i went for romanian

the task of the first day is to at least say these phrases out loud in the target language:
Hello
My name is ...
pleased to meet you
goodbye

personally, i added 'i'm from...'

so, here it is

Salut (hi)
Mă numesc "cartofi limbă" (My name is "language potato")
Eu sunt din Olanda. (i'm from the netherlands)
Încântat de cunoștință (pleased to meet you)

day 2 is 'me vocabulary'

so, i should be able to answer these questions, even if 'i sound like tarzan' answering them;

What do you do for a living? Nimic, sunt student
What do or did you study? Am studia economie
What do you do for fun? vizionarea de fotbal și învățarea limbilor străine
Anything interesting about yourself? sunt musulmane, Îmi place muzica romaneasca.
Where are you from? sunt din olanda dar părinții mei sunt din Maroc
Why are you learning Romanian?

i'll write the questions (in romanian) later this evening, i don't know when i'll record it though

So, this is what i posted:

pentru mine

Salut,

and this kinda* what i got back:

pentru mine

Salut,
Îmi place să mă uit la fotbal și să învăț limbi străine (<= your version 'învățarea limbilor' isn't bad at all, but in this case/context doesn't sound like someone Romanian) . Îmi place muzica românească mult (<= or 'mult muzica românească'; sounds more natural) , cântăreții mei preferați (<= cântăreț uses the male gender) sunt Elena Gheorghe și Alina Eremia. (<= you were thinking about 'for only three days' but in romanian the for isn't really necessary)

Hi your text is good, especially for 3 days of learning,

One more thing, just say "română".
"Limba română" sounds toooo articulate, it's correct, but kind of forced.

day 4 - study your text and if you feel like it do something fun in the language.

so my fun thing is trying to transcribe a part of one of my favourite songs:

This song (from 0:10 to 0:43):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjKrIEvMAg0

am așteptat sâm scri sunt bine
nam nicio veste de la tine
te port în sufiet ca un tatuaj
aş vrea sîn ştir dar tînca nam curaj
niciun semn, niciun sms, stau in stres
dragosta pre bune nu din interes
ma les când guini ma ama les
şi ma presute toate câ iubesc

Uauauaua, lucrurile au cam deraiat aici:
Owowow, things got off road here:

Am așteptat să-mi scrii: Sunt bine.
N-am nicio veste de la tine.
Te port în suflet ca un tatuaj.
aş vrea să-l șterg dar încă n-am curaj.
Niciun semn, niciun sms, stau in stres.

I always wondered how foreigners hear out speech.

so, i tried to write out the following part of ecou and to translate the part i tried to write the last time (i needed google translate for the parts i underlined), so this is what i have:

Am așteptat să-mi scrii: Sunt bine. i've waited for you to write me: i'm fine
N-am nicio veste de la tine. i haven't heard anything from you
Te port în suflet ca un tatuaj. i have you in my mind like a tattoo
aş vrea să-l șterg dar încă n-am curaj. i want to remove it but i don't have the courage yet
Niciun semn, niciun sms, stau in stres. not a sign, not an sms, i'm in stress
Dragosta-i pe bune*, nu din interes. real love, not out of interest
mai ales când cu cu inima am ales. especially when the heart has chosen
şi mai presus de toate că iubesc. that above all i love you

în casâ mea ca un ecou
rasune numai glasul tău
ai fost şi vei ramăne

suflet = soul
minte = mind

În casa mea ca un ecou
răsună numai glasul tău.
Ai fost şi vei rămâne
marea mea iubire.
Nici n-am apucat să-ţi spun
cuvintele de rămas bun.
Ai fost şi vei rămâne
marea mea iubire.

so, learned some vocab,
i did three 'levels' on memrise, specifically the course: Romanian 101
from the vocab i learned today, i didn't know these:
mi-ar place - i would like
îmi trebuie - i need
rău - bad
mare - big
înţeleg - i understand
mic - small
mă duc - i go
ştiu - i know
pot - i can
dau - i give

languagepotato wrote:Mi-ar plăcea - I would like

It's a mistake that many people do so nothing new, but the correct for is still "mi-ar plăcea".

a plăcea = to like (a place)

I don''t have a romanian keyboard but i still need to type romanian letters, so i was wondering does romanian have a standard way to type the letters that aren't common in other languages if you don't have a romanian keyboard, like how in german you can use oe, ae and ue for ö, ä and ü.

Na-i putea pune tastatura română acolo la "Language bar".
Și nu, nu avem un alt mod de a le scrie.
Dacă nu le putem scrie atunci o lăsăm fără diacritice.

Couldn't you put the Romanian keyboard, there at the "Language bar" part.
And no, we don't have another way of writing them.
If we can't write them then we just leave it without diacritics.

Exemplu:
Îmi place câinele --> Imi place cainele.

because it is difficult for me to hear the difference between ă and î/â, i'm training my ears to hear the difference, but i'm having trouble finding minimal pairs.
so far i've only found râu and rău
