Is Romanian more like a Romance or a Slavic language

Postby lishaoxuan » 2007-11-21, 11:01

I've seen some Romanian text and found it resembles those Romance languages, like latin or spanish. But upon comtemplating Romania's location, Romanian must also have something in common with the Slavic languages.

So, could anyone give me some idea how Romanian is classified??

Thanks a lot.

Yes, Romanian is officially classified as a Romance language, but there are also many influences on its vocabulary from Slavic languages. I can't think of any influences on Romanian grammar, but it's likely that there is some. Hopefully a linguist who has studied and compared both Romanian and a Slavic language will come by and respond.

I'm not a linguist but I have experience with Romanian and a number of Slavic languages. I don't find in the Romanian grammar any big Slavic influence, and those typical Slavic features like many noun cases, verb aspects and lack of articles are not to be found in Romanian. The vocab has borrowed many words though, probably because Church Slavonic was until recently the language of religion, and Romanian was written in cyrilic.
I suspect that Greek had a greater influence on Romanian grammar (and on the whole Balkan Sprachbund thingie), but take it with a grain of salt.
There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary and those who don't.

There are some Slavic elements in Romanian grammar (not many though). Even a very basic feature, the preservation of the neuter gender is sometimes explained by Slavic influence. More obvious example is the -o vocative ending, which is taken from Slavic.

Romanian is undoubtfully a Romance language and a member of Balkan Lingustic Union.

Yeah... the romanian language used for writing the cyrilic alphabet until the Cuza's reform, in 1864.
The fact is that the church and the cancelary used the slavonic language (old church slavonic) until about 1700, when Metropolitan Antim the Ivirian (a very strange thing, he wasn't Romanian at all, he was born in Georgia, rised at Constantinople...) officialy introduced the so called ''Romanian liturgical language''.

Romanian is more of a Romance language than English is a Germanic one.

Slavic influence? Not just the vocabulary. You can feel it in the sound as well. To me it's like Italian with a Slavic touch :D

Hey that's some fresh cool perspective :o When wondering why it keeps the neuter gender I could only think of the isolation.

Romanian neuter gender

Postby 0stsee » 2008-06-30, 12:18

I remember that when I learned Romanian, I had the impression that the so called neuter gender was actually just a mix of masculine and feminine instead of a separate gender.

The Romanian neutral is kind of a pseudo-gender, like in German. In Romanian some words are one gender in singular then switch genders in the plural, those are the neutal words. It's pretty cool it adds more spice to the language.BTW how would you say "the language" in Romanian? Since I assume it would be feminine I'll try my best at it...... limbaua, limbeua? Forgive me I'm a noob at Romanian.

p.s.: i didn’t translate in english because i’ve noticed that your romanian is very good, but if you need to confirm your understanding, i’d be glad to help :)

Chiar?

I said that I chose to use "aer", the latin word, and not "văzduh", the slavic word, for "air" (I did not deny its slavic origin  )
