Verb Help

Postby mehnitmadness » 2007-10-26, 21:34

Ok, I am really struggling with verbs. I don't quite understand the tenses :( Could someone really smart translate the following sentences and give a brief verb explanation?

:doggy:

1. I understand Romanian.
2. She understands Romanian.
3. I would understand Romanian.
4. I could understand Romanian.
5. I will understand Romanian.
6. I understood Romanian.
7. I want to understand Romanian.
8. Understand Romanian! (You know, like a comand? )

Thank you!

:lmao:

Nu vorbesc prea bine româneşte, iar pot să ajut...
I don't speak very well Romanian, but I can help...

1. (Eu) înţeleg limba română.
When a verb ends in -e, just remove last -e from that verb.

2. (Ea) înţelege limba română.
The verb ending in -e remains in third person sg. as is, in infinitive.

...

5. (Eu) voi înţelege limba română.
In future, the verb remains in infinite, you have to conjugate the verb "a vrea"; in this case: I will understand = Eu voi înţelege; other example: You will understand = Tu vei înţelege.

...

7. (Eu) voiesc să înţeleg limba română.
In this case, the sentence is modified as follows: in front of the second verb you have to include the word . The verb doesn't change, except the third person, then the verb is changed.

8. Înţelegi limba română!
When the verb ends in -e and you want so say a sentence in future, just use the form of the verb in the second person singular. No pronoun!

Sper că am ajutat. N-ai pentru ce. :)
I hope I helped you. You're welcome. :)

Here my attempt. I'm a Romanian speaker, but not a lingvist :)
I will translate "Romanian" as the adverb "româneşte", not as a noun (limba română).

1.(Eu) înţeleg româneşte
The pronoun is optional here.

2.Ea înţelege româneşte

3.(Eu) aş înţelege româneşte

4. Aş putea (înţelege/să înţeleg) româneşte
Literally "I would be able to understand". As for the verb "to understand", you can either use it in infinitive, or rather use the subjunctive in a true Balkan Sprachbund manner.

5. (Eu) voi înţelege româneşte

6. (Eu) am înţeles româneşte

7. (Eu) vreau să înţeleg româneşte
Again, you could use the infinive instead subjunctive here, but it would sound ... archaic.
I used the verb "a vrea" here, whereas I2i50 used "a voi". I want translates more like a vrea. A voi means something like "I will", or "I have the will to " and is more an auxiliary verb.

8. Înţelege româneşte!
That's the imperative. It's when you give a command, or when you kindly ask someone to please do something.
There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary and those who don't.
