Conversation in Finnish / Suomenkielinen keskustelu

Postby Rhaegar » 2005-10-04, 4:17

Maybe a handy tool for the Unilang Challenge would be for all those who are learning Finnish to practice using whatever they've learned in an actual conversation, both with fellow beginners and native speakers, going back and forth, giving everyone a chance to practice asking and answering questions, past, future, etc. Similar to the Discussion thread, maybe, but it's far more specific and short-term, and think it might help alot more than just posting in the thread for the Challenge itself.

Thoughts? :)

Yes, good idea. But we already have a thread called "Finnish Discussion Thread". How would it differ from "Finnish Conversation Thread"? May I suggest changing the names? In the Lithuanian forum we have "We speak Lithuanian" for conversation practise in Lithuanian and "We learn Lithuanian" for questions in any language. Of course we don't always follow these rules, but still it's good to have that division. I think that would work here as well.

Joo, hyvä idea. Mutta meillähän on jo viestiketju, jonka nimi on "Finnish Discussion Thread". Miten se eroaisi "Finnish Conversation Thread" -ketjusta? Liettuan kielen foorumissa meillä on "We speak Lithuanian" -ketju, jossa keskustelemme liettuaksi, ja "We learn Lithuanian" -ketju, jossa kysymme kysymyksiä millä tahansa kielellä. Me emme tietenkään aina noudata näitä sääntöjä, mutta silti tuollainen jako on hyvä olla olemassa. Luulen, että se toimisi myös täällä.

That's what I would think it would be like, like the Lithuanian threads...the Discussion thread, as it has been, more for actually learning, where the conversation thread would be for those who are doing the challenge to have a chance to simply converse with locals or fellow beginners and try and hold a back-and-forth conversation :)

Should everything have English translations?

Pitäisikö kaikella olla englanninkieliset käännökset?

Definitely. There are no fluent non-natives here apart from some Estonians. ;)

Paljonko kello on missä olet? Minulla on huviko?

Hyvästi :)

edit : Hi, how are you? I just returned from class, I had politics. I like university already, but I haven't had any exams.

What time is it where you are? Are you having fun?

Goodbye :)

Hmm... I don't know, actually. We don't have that in the Lithuanian thread, and maybe that's why there are more Lithuanians than students of the language. Maybe we could translate when someone asks us to do so?

No niin, olen nyt kääntänyt joidenkin ketjujen nimet. Jos ette ole tyytyväisiä, kertokaa ihmeessä.

Ok, I've changed some thread names. If you're not happy with them, please just tell me.

Opiskeletko oppiainen? Missäsi mennäsi kouluon?

Minä olen oppilasa Historia yliopistossa läntinen ontario, londonissa.

(I couldn't figure out how exactly to do the last sentence..trying to say I'm a student of History at the University of Western Ontario...but I doubt I got anywhere close to it. Got too confusing trying to sort it all out..maybe I should master the basics before I go for the tough stuf, eh ;))

Anyway...

What are you studying? What school do you go to?

I'm a student of History at the University of Western Ontario in London.

This would be in Finnish: Mitä sinä opiskelet? Mitä koulua käyt? Minä olen historian opiskelija X:n yliopistossa Londonissa. (I write X:n, because I'm not sure if Western Ontario is the name of the University, or just the location. By the way, if we talk about the London in England, it's Lontoo in Finnish. But this Canadian London is probably just London.)

Minä opiskelen Helsingin yliopistossa Venäjän kieltä ja kirjallisuutta, liettuan kieltä sekä käännösteoriaa.

I study Russian language and literature, Lithuanian language and translation theory at the Helsinki University.

Yeah, in this case Western Ontario is part of the name. Would the Canadian London have a different name? Does Boston in the US have the same name as the English town, or is it different as well?

Venäjän = Russian?
Liettuan = Lithuanian?
Sekä = Theory?
Käänösteroriaa = Translation?

For Käänösteroriaa, would the stem be Käänösteroria? Or Käänös? Or...something :p

Anteeksi, minä olen poissaoleva oppituntin. Minä menen opiskellan. Hei hei!

Boston is just Boston ;).

Venäjän = Russia's
Liettuan = Lithuania's
Sekä = and also
Käännösteoriaa = Translation theory (partitive)
käännös = a/the translation
teoria = a/the theory

Terve kaikki, minä olen Varislintu, ja minä asun Helsingissä. Minäkin opiskelen yliopistossa, mutta en opiskele kieliä. Minä opiskelen sosiaalipolitiikkaa. Se on todella mielenkiintoista.

Nyt yritän keksiä jonkun kysymyksen...

Mitä sinä teet huomenna?

Hello, everybody, I'm Varislintu, and I live in Helsinki. I also study at the university, but I don't study languages. I'm studying social policy. It's really interesting.

Now I'll try to think of some kind of question...

What are you going to do tomorrow?
