Okay, I did a translation, hope you can make sense of it even with the lazy presentation :P. And I got lazy towards the end but the lyrics follow the same pattern there. I find the lyrics rather silly, really :lol:. Never actually could follow very well what he sings, the times I've heard the song. But good for Finnish practise, I'm sure :D.

I like a song which I heard only once so I have no idea what its name is. The melody is very simple and the word Kuusamo repeats many times. Could anyone please find the lyric and translate it into English? Thanks so much

Could any of you Finnish speakers be so kind as to translate the song I posted above? It's already been quite a while but I'm still really confused about the meaning/love the song so any help would be appreciated. Kiitos! :)

Tyttö Tanssii- The girl dances

yö laskee hänet matkaan - night sets her off
silmä tähdet heijastaa - eyes reflect the stars
luo hunnun hiuksillensa - create a veil for (her) hair
vihma karmiininpunainen - carmine drizzle

tyttö tanssii kanssa kuun ja tähtien - the girl dances with the moon and the stars
tuikkii silmät kuin nuo tähdet - her eyes twinkle like those stars
- vannon kuulen musiikin - - I swear I hear music
nyt se tanssii kanssa vetten kalojen - now she dances with the fish of the water
huulet siniset kuin veden kylmä jää - lips blue as the cold ice of the water
mikset jää tanssimaan? - why don't you stay and dance?
mikset jää tanssimaan?

mustan veden pimennoissa - in the darkness of the black water
käy tanssi ainiaan iäti - the dance continues forever
tytön hennon vartalossa - on the girl's graceful body
kalan suomut ovat kiinni - fish scales are attached

Hi,
I want to sing a song by Sibelius in my recital, but I can't find any English translation of the text. Can anyone help me? Thanks. Here is the poem:

Souda, souda, sinisorsa,
souda tähän rantaan;
pesäs tänne rakenna sen
ritvakoivun kantaan!

Laske, laske, pursi pieni,
laske valkamaani;
purrestasi neito nuori,
astu asuntaani!

Tääll' on sija suoritettu
sammalista sulle;
tule, tule, kultaseni
kumppaniksi mulle!

Tääll' on aallot armahat ja
suuret hongat huojuu;
solkikoivut soreasti
aallon helmaan nuojuu.

Swim, swim, mallard,
swim to this shore;
build your nest here
by its birch tree

Set out, set out, little boat,
set out in my haven;
from your boat, young maiden,
step into my dwelling place!

Here is a place prepared
for you of moss;
come, come, sweetheart
become a partner for me

Here are sweet waves and
great pines sway;
birches gracefully
lean out and brush the water.

Moi! :)

Hey guys, I know this is pretty random and probably my very first post on the Finnish forum but I'm thinking of starting a Finnish through music kinda site! :) I was wondering if it would be a good idea, as I'm sure it will help a lot of Finnish learners learn as much as I have, I just wanna know what you guys think ^^

I've already got a rough idea how I want to set it up :D

Well, I've been learning Finnish "seriously" for over a month haha although I've played around with it since two years ago.

Been listening to awesome bands/artists such as

Haloo Helsinki!, Chisu, Irina, PMMP, Stella, TikTak, Katri Ylander well there are more but too long to list ^^ and I'm looking forward to the release of Chisu's, Haloo Helsinki's and Antti Tuisku's albums this year :)

So yeah :) opinions?

Kiitos! :D

A good amount of Finnish learners here seem to have been attracted to Finnish through music, or use music as a major tool in their learning, so I think it sounds like a very good idea :).

Varislintu, thank you so much for the translation. I really appreciate your help. Sibelius is a great composer and his songs are so beautiful. Too bad more people don't sing his art songs in their recitals.

Hi, I'm a classical singer and I would love to sing a set of songs by Sibelius in my recital. Unfortunately, I can't find the IPA for two of the songs and I was wondering if someone here could help me. Thanks a lot. Here is one of the poems:

Flickan kom ifrån sin älsklings möte,
kom med röda händer. Modern sade:
"Varav rodna dina händer, flicka?"
Flickan sade: "Jag har plockat rosor
och på törnen stungit mina händer."

Åter kom hon från sin älsklings möte,
kom med röda läppar. Modern sade:
"Varav rodna dina läppar, flicka?"
Flickan sade: "Jag har ätit hallon
och med saften målat mina läppar."

Åter kom hon från sin älsklings möte,
kom med bleka kinder. Modern sade:
"Varav blekna dina kinder, flicka?"

jlv305, unlike the other one, this song is in Swedish. You might want to post it in the Swedish forum for better luck with the IPA ;) :).

Sorry, I sent the wrong song (I already post this one in the Swedish forum). Here is the one in Finnish:

Mistä lastu lainehilla?
Pilske pieni aalon päällä?
Yksiksensä illan suussa?
Virran vettä vaeltamassa?

Tuolta lastu lainehilla,
Pilske pieni aallon päällä:
Pohjan lasten laitumilta,
Sinitunturin tuvilta.

Siellä kulta hongan kaasi,
Veisti, veisti sulho venhon:
Kohta vierii virran vettä,
Neittä nuorta noutamaan!

These Kalevala-ish things are difficult to translate, but I gave it a shot :P:

Wood chip in the waves

From where this chip in the waves?
This small piece of wood on a wave?
Alone when evening comes?
Flowing with the flow of water?

From there the chip in the waves,
the small piece of wood on a wave:
from the pastures of the children of Pohja
from the cottages in Blue Fell.

There beloved felled a pine,
carved, carved a boat, this bridegroom:
Soon will tumble down the stream,
To collect a young maiden!

Thanks Varislintu for the translation. It's a little difficult for me to understand the poem completely, but it gives me an idea of what the song is about.

It's basically a complicated way to express that there was a wood chip floating in a body of water because a young man was carving a boat upstream in order to go find a wife :grin:.

Haha, well that would be awesome.

Well, I know Kotiteollisuus and Teräsbetoni but those are mainly metal bands which isn't exactly my cup of tea.

And of course I know Chisu's album's coming out, love her. She's awesome. Haha, can't wait! :D

Hi :) I wonder if someone could translate a short sentence into Finnish. It's not really a song, just a few words my friend would like to have translated.

"Happy birthday, my angel from Cracow! Love me, in spite of everything.
Your rolling stone" (the signature being my very poor translation, what is meant by "rolling stone" is "a person who moves around a lot and never settles down").

Thank you in advance :)
