Kotiteollisuus <3 I was translating some of their stuff for my own personal enjoyment so I thought it'd help to post them here
Tuonelan Koivut
Hukun tämän tien tyhjyyteen
keskelle korkeiden talojen
jotka kohoavat taivaisiin
koteina Jumalan kuvien
I'm drowning in the emptiness of this road
amidst tall houses which rise to the sky
as homes of pictures of God.
jotka joivat nuoruuden lähteestä
jotka rakensivat onnelan
mut eivät löytäneet ihmistä sieltä
löysivät pitkän, piinallisen kuoleman
who drank from the fountain of youth
who built Onnela
but no people were found there
they just found a long, painful death.
Vierii kyynel, vierii toinen, vierii
silmistä vesi veden jälkeen
rinnoilta helmoille, helmoilta
joeksi ja joesta järveen
järvi syvä kuin synkin suru on
musta kuin yötaivas pimeä
Tuonelan koivut, lehdettömät
kuiskivat meidän kahden nimeä
A tear rolls, and another,
rolls from the eyes, drop after drop
from the chest to the hem, from the hem
to the river and from the river to the lake.
A lake as deep as the darkest sorrow,
black like the dark night sky.
The birches of Tuonela, bare
whisper our two names.
Tuntematonta maisemaa kuljen
teen matkaa toivoen
väsyneenä jään lepäämään
katveeseen Tuonelan koivujen
I travel the unknown landscape,
I make my journey hoping,
tired I stop to rest
in the shadow of the birches of Tuonela.
Sanoisit jotain, tekisit jotain
jotta herätä saisin
jotta Tuonen teiltä, sen vainioilta
saisin elämäni takaisin
I wish you'd say something, do something
so that I could wake up,
so that I could get my life back
from the roads of Tuoni, from its fields.
IANKAIKKINEN
Yö kestää vuorokauden
eikä lopu sittenkään
kellon viisarit liikkuvat, mutta aika ei
liiku mihinkään
The night lasts 24 hours
and doesn't stop then
the hands on the clock move, but time doesn't
move on
Silloin ikävä kävelee sisälle
vaikkei kukaan pyytänyt sitä peremmälle
se istuu alas, se istuu vielä
syliänikin syvemmälle
...ja syvemmälle
Then longing walks in
even though no-one invited it in
it sits down, it sits deeper than my lap
Iankaikkinen
kulkee isäntänä pelloillaan
ihmisen sielu taskussaan
ihmisen sydän rinnassaan
Eternity
walks his fields, the master
with a human soul in his pocket
a human heart in his chest
Kuoleman jälkeen on elämää
olen todisteena siitä
olen kuollut kerran ja toisenkin
eikä sekään riitä
After death comes life
I'm proof of it
I've died once and again
And not even that's enough
Enkä minä tätä kirjoittanut
tämän kirjoitti ikävä tai kaiho
ja pisarana sateessa on
yhden ihmisen rakkaus tai raivo
And I didn't write this,
it was written by longing or pining
And one person's love or rage
is just a drop in the rain
KADONNEET
Tyhjään pihaan
katselet ikkunasta
päivääsi vihaat
vaikka on aamu vasta
aamusta iltaan
on liian pitkä matka
tahtoisit luovuttaa
pää käskee: jatka
You look from the window
into an empty yard
You hate the day
though it's only morning.
From morning to night
it's too long a journey.
You'd like to give up
your head commands: carry on.
Mietin kuka olet
mitä teet työksesi
oletko kotiäiti
ja onko miehesi
juurtunut, mädäntynyt
sohvaan kii
samalla kun sinä
katoat haaveisiin
I wonder who you are,
what you do for work,
are you a housewife
and is your husband
rooted, rotted
into the sofa
while you
disappear into aspirations.
Kadonneet kiertävät kuuta karkuun
ja huomista, sen tuomista
suruista tai iloista eivät saa mitään
Aurinko palaa, se valaa
kaunista maatamme, ja saatamme
huomata kuinka sen mullasta itää
ei mitään!
The lost run from the moon and tomorrow
the sadness and joy it brings,
the sun burns, it lights our beautiful land
and we can notice how NOTHING sprouts from the mud.
Tuon tuulipuvun alla
on kauneus piilossa
sitä ulkoilutat
leikkipuistossa
kerran viikossa
tila-autolla kaupunkiin
tahtoisit eksyä
kauppakeskuksiin
Under that windproof suit,
is beauty in hiding,
you take it out for a walk,
in the playpark,
once a week,
to the city,
in a space wagon
you'd like to get lost
in the shopping centres.
Samalla raivolla
läpi vuorien
samoilla lauseilla
läpi vuosien
näin elämä yrittää
meitä lannistaa
jos mikään muutu ei, me
tänne katoamme
With the same rage
through the mountains
with the same words
through the years
and so life tries
to crush us
if nothing changes
we'll disappear here. (get lost)
KAKSIN KÄSIN
Pirun viulu soi
sen tahdissa laulamme, tanssimme joka ilta
The devil's violin plays
we sing to it, we dance to it every night
Piru nauraa meille,
se reppumme täyttää turhilla unelmilla - saavuttamattomilla
The devil laughs at us,
it fills our backpacks with empty dreams - unfulfillable/unobtainable
Täytyy elää vaan
meitä Piru vie ja se tie
on kuin kauhoisi paskaa kaksin käsin
Paetaan kuolemaa
ikuisesti elää se, joka kerää
kaikkea kaksin käsin
Just have to live,
the devil leads us and the road
is like shoveling shit with both hands
We escape death
he who grabs everything with two hands
lives eternally
Ota kiinni mistä saat
kauho kaikkea, hekumoi ikuisesta elämästä
Take what you can get
shovel everything, glorifying eternal life
Sitä himoa taas tyydytät
vaikka tulet sitä tyydyttämästä - revipä iloa tästä
You're satisfying that urge again
even though you're just coming from satisfying it - find something funny in THAT.*
Minä nukun kuin koira, ja lopulta
pahaan uneen herään
siinä esi-isämme eivät enää
jaksa itkeä lastensa perään
I sleep like a dog, and finally
I wake from a bad dream
in it our forefathers can no longer
carry on crying after their children
*This is hard to translate - a really Finnish comment I think.. like you present someone with a really depressing situation and challenge them to find something positive in it (of course you know there won't be
)
