Czech experiment

Postby Junesun » 2006-10-14, 9:58

I will have the chance to visit Brno (second biggest city in the Czech Republic) and attend a seminar on languages and language-learning on the internet there from November 4th to 10th. The seminar will be mostly in Esperanto; it is being organised by a group called E@I (Esperanto che Interreto) and they are also the ones to pay almost all my costs for attending.

Since I am very interested in learning languages, I decided to use this opportunity to see how much Czech I can learn before the seminar. Yesterday I found a Czech dictionary and phrasebook in a bookstore on special for just 2 Euros and bought it. A few days ago I also ordered the "Teach yourself Czech" book and CD, which should arrive any day now. So, I'm curious how this will work out. I'll post my experiences in my blog at http://realjunesun.livejournal.com .

For now, I'm still struggling with the pronunciation. Can anybody recommend some good Czech songs and provide the lyrics as well if possible? I believe that would help me absorb the pronunciation and spelling more easily.

Hello!
First of all, I wish you good luck with learning czech :)
I had the same problem as you and found possibly the only site which gives you many songs in mp3, with lyrics as well. This group plays rock and I like it a lot, some texts are funny, so enjoy!

These are some free songs from record label Indies records. I don't think that the lyrics are suitable for a beginner, but if you are looking just for something to listen to in order to become acqainted with Czech pronunciation, it may help. I just chose several artists which I myself like. 8)

Radůza - Bylo nebylo, lyrics, mp3 (down the page)
Budoár staré dámy - Náměsíčná, lyrics, mp3
Nahoru po schodišti dolů band - Nervy, lyrics, mp3
Traband - Přijíždí posel, lyrics, mp3, and there are also two videos, the lyrics are here and here
Hradišťan a Jiří Pavlica - Krátký popis léta, lyrics, mp3
