You can pronounce the Croatian h [x] or [h], that's an optional pronounciation. Just like the Hebrew r.

AFAIK (but you'd better wait for someone else to confirm it) you insert a schwa before the "r".

This pronunciation guide states the same.

Krk is pronounced ['krk] you can't really tell if it's ['kerk] or another vowel, just try to pronounce ['krk] quickly.

Krk is the name of an island in Croatia, and I believe it indeed meant 'throat', but in the current language the word 'grlo' and 'grkljan' are used. (You see that they have the same origin)

Here are some words in Serbian that are composed only of consonatnts:

krv = blood
vrh = top
crv = worm
Grk = a Greek person
brk = moustache
crn = black
trn = thorn
vrt = garden

As you can see, the only consonant that can 'act' as a vowel is r.

In fact, I received a postcard from Croatia and on ths stamp, it was written "Republika Hrvatska" and on the picture, "Krk".Mystery... and then you resolved everything!
