can't learn vocabulary sheets

Postby Arthur36 » 2013-08-14, 8:33

Hi,

My name is Arthur, I am 20. I have been trying to learn Fench for a couple of weeks. But I am really struggling with remembering vocabulary sheets. Have you got any tips to make it easier ?

Thanks,

Arthur.

I'll tell you how I learnt Spanish/Portuguese vocabulary, maybe it'll help you.

I listened to a lot of songs that I liked in English and in other languages that I understood
but with subtitles in the language that I wanted to learn.

And trust me if you listen to the same songs again and again and again
then eventually the translation will stick to your head.

If you're a beginner then it's still good because usually songs have only basic and useful words.

And once you get to a bit higher level you could also watch
films or documentaries with French subtitles.

And since French is a big and important language you'll find enough songs and films.

And if you choose this method then only and only listen to songs that you like
so it will be a pleasure to listen and learn.

What kind of vocabulary sheets are you using? You could also try Duolingo or Memrise.

Thanks for you help.

Levente.Maier : I'll try to put it into practice. I don't know why, but when I learnt German, learning vocabulary sheets was not so difficult...
I think I have to listen to French people talking and get used to French sounds.

Miae : I use a French English vocabulary book Robert&Collins. A friend of mine who's French actually used it to learn English and gave it to me. I'll have a look at these websites. Thanks.

I used to use quizlet.com for keeping vocab lists for my students, but now I've switched to Anki for my own studies, simply because it has an Android app, and also it's better for spaced repetition...

For the English language, there is vocabulary.com. I wonder if there's an equivalent for French somewhere...

@miae, Duolingo looks interesting, thanks for sharing the link!

And what is causing you most problems learning vocabulary? Also, Reddit has a great post on French resources and you can read their tips and tricks document. And I just discovered Lyrics training, where you fill in the missing words in the lyrics while listening to the songs, it's quite fun.

I actually don't know. German vocabulary didn't cause me much problem but French words and pronunciation don't sound familiar at all. I need to learn words more than twice a day during a few weeks before remembering them. I'm quite struggling with it but I'm sure I'll find a solution thanks this forum ! :)

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your help.

I have tried to follow your methods and would like to give you some feedbacks.

Films, music : it has been really helpful for grasping the French pronunciation and it was pleasant to do. I think I am more familiar with French than I used to. I have listened to French music radios, learned lyrics, watched films and series with French subtitles and then in French. I did enjoy it. I would recommend it to people that are in the same situation.

Anki : it seems to be a really useful tool and effective according to the reviews I have read. But it did not work with me. I have had difficulties to master this software … So I gave up working with Anki. I am reluctant to work with something that is virtual. I don’t even know myself.

I'll have a look at duolingo in a few days.

If someone has other tips to make vocabulary (in all languages) easy to learn, don’t hesitate to answer this post.

Cheers.

I think that one of the keys to learn vocabulary effectively is to use it in a context so that your brain creates connections. For instance: you try to learn the word "nuage", instead of just repeating it over and over again, you could try to use it in a sentence "Le ciel est plein de nuages" "Hier, j'ai vu un nuage rigolo". It's really effective for me.
Par exemple, l'enfant croit au Père Noël. L'adulte non. L'adulte ne croit pas au Père Noël. Il vote.

I have always enjoyed using picture dictionaries. They are great (except for verbs).

I agree with miae that you should try memrise.com

They specialise in helping you memorise things really effectively, by using mnemonics. It is really very effective.
Check my website for reviews of the most popular language learning software. If you have a different opinion, please let me know!

Hi everyone, :D

I have finally tried duolingo for a few days. It has been really helpful. Repeating is the key. You have to translate the word in English and then to find the words with images. I think it’s really effective. I have made progress; even though I can’t spend hours in front of my computer.
I like the idea of using a context to learn vocabulary. Really helpful!

With all the resources you gave to me, I have really improved my level of French. Thanks everyone.

However don’t hesitate to answer this post and give me new ideas.
Cheers.

I am learning French as well and I am memorising vocabulary with flashcards! Very efficient! I am quite interested in using FlashSticks as well. It’s very similar to flashcards. Does anyone know anything about FlashSticks (post-it notes with vocal words) made in UK? Any feedback? I have just ordered a French pack and I am waiting for it. I hope it is very useful
